Evolution from Scientist to Monkey

Darwin’s theory of evolution

Scientists and atheists are very fond of Charles Darwin’s work on natural selection and evolution of the species. It was only after Darwin’s theory of evolution became widely accepted that the scientific community had a reasonably plausible explanation of the development of the diverse forms of life we see around us without any divine direction or intelligence behind it. His work was quickly accepted by all atheistic men and practically it is the support of the modern godless technological world. However evolution is still only a theory and although it parallels the evolution of consciousness described in the Vedas, the idea that material bodies evolve into different species by the process of ‘natural selection’ driven by chance is completely false.

We have never seen one species turn into another species and there is no evidence for this ever happening in the fossil record. That is because there are 8,400,000 species of life and these species are fixed. It is the consciousness of the particular living entity, spirit soul, at the time of death, or the time he leaves the body, that determines the type of body he will be placed into in his next birth.

So it is the living entities who’s consciousness is either evolving or devolving and who change from one body to another. But the 8,400,000 species of life remain constant. Ultimately the whole material world with all its universes containing unlimited planets and stars will be annihilated however the patterns of these 8,400,000 species of living entities will remain stored and when the material world again becomes manifest the exact same 8,400,000 species will again become manifest. They are never ‘evolved’ and there is no chance or natural selection in the process.

Of course in the beginning of the creation the whole surface of the planet is covered with water. So initially only the aquatic living entities are able to take birth. But as the water drys up and the land starts to come out the insects and plants and animals and man also become manifest.

The exact process of how the planets of the universe are populated with living entities is described elaborately in the Srimad Bhagavatam and for further details on this process I strongly recommend you study the Srimad Bhagavatam. You will find that this ancient Sanskrit text from India is full of astonishingly correct scientific information.

So although there is an evolution of consciousness and the world is initially covered by water and therefore there are only aquatic living entities present and the creatures of the land come later, after the water dries up and the land becomes manifest, the process driving this manifestation of the living entities is not at all natural selection and chance.  In some ways this process could be called evolution, but the theory that the diverse forms of life we experience around us were caused by ‘natural selection’ driven by random mutations is completely false.

We have never found the “missing links”

Darwin himself admitted there was no proof for his theory of one species gradually evolving into another species in the fossil record at the time of writing his thesis, but he was sure as time went on the “Missing Links” would be found. The subsequent fossil evidence has done nothing to support his theory. There are unlimited specimens which contradict the idea of natural selection altogether and no proof to support a continuous chain of slightly different species evolving from one form to another more advanced form. It is just not there in the fossil record. So why have the supposedly intelligent scientific community not rejected the idea of evolution of the species? The only answer is the alternative is to accept some sort of divine direction driving the force of creation and that is unacceptable to the materialistic scientists and atheists in our hedonistic world.

Of course the ‘theory’ that there is a God, a Supreme Person in control who is directing and managing the process of the creation of the material world is a completely valid and logical ‘theory’, but it is rejected by science because they want to be god themselves. They do not what to accept that there may be some intelligence and direction that is greater than themselves.

Therefore rather than considering the perfectly valid ‘theory’ that there is intelligent control behind the creation they instead remain attached their disproved theory of natural selection by chance which allows them to imagine that they are the greatest creatures in the creation and there is no one superior to them…

Banishing God and building a “Brave New World”

Generally we have all come to the material world because we want to become the enjoyer. Actually as living entities our real constitutional position is that we are eternally servants of Krishna. We experience the highest transcendental pleasure by serving Krishna. That is the only way we can become happy, by serving Krishna. However we have a little independence. So we can choose to serve Krishna–which is the proper use of our independence–or we can decide to give up the service of Krishna and try and be happy independently from Krishna. Instead of serving Krishna we want to become just like Krishna. Krishna is the Supreme enjoyer and we are His servants. But sometimes we become envious of the position of Krishna and we want to become the enjoyer, just like Krishna.

So that is why Krishna created this material world and that is why He sent us here. We want to enjoy our senses to the maximum extent and science is about facilitating this sense gratification by exploiting the natural resources of this planet and exploiting the energy of the general mass of people by engaging them in working in factories, laboratories, hellish cities and other degraded situations to build the scientists “Brave New World.” Practically they have succeeded in building a new world with money and sense gratification as the worshipable objects and God is banished altogether.

Are we any happier than our forefathers?

But what have we achieved? Certainly we can now drive in fast cars, fly from one side of the planet to the other quickly and play games on our computers and phones, but are we any happier now than our forefathers one hundred years ago? My answer would be unquestionably no, definitely not. We see signs of despair and anxiety everywhere. Crime, murder, rape and suicide levels are climbing alarmingly, killer diseases like AIDS and cancer are claiming more and more victims despite the helpless scientists feeble attempts to stop them. War and social and political strife is affecting a large percentage of the earth’s population… in other words the world is in a big mess. Our quality of life has not improved at all from the so-called advances of science.

Nature is not blind

Nature is not blind. There is an intelligent direction behind nature and there is a purpose for life here in the material world. This world is manifested to give us, the rebellious living entities, a chance to live separately from God and became false lords and masters. Because we want to be god Krishna, the real God, has very mercifully built this material world for us. It’s something like a child’s playground. We can come here and try to fulfill our desires of becoming the lord and master. But there’s a catch. This world is more like a prison than a playground. Although the material energy is very attractive, the real pleasure substance we are searching for cannot be found here. That pleasure, or ananda, can only be found in the spiritual world, the kingdom of God. So this material world is a place of rectification.

The Material World is designed to frustrate us!

To some extent we can fulfill our material desires here in the material world but nature is constructed in such a way to frustrate all our attempts in the long run. We are forced to come back here to the material world birth after birth and in every birth we try to enjoy our senses but we are always frustrated in the end. Every body we get in the material world is subject to birth, old age, disease and death. After many, many births of frustration in the material world an intelligent person can see there is actually no pleasure here so he begins to search for something else, something spiritual…

Scientists have good intelligence, but they are misusing it

Scientists are actually misusing their God-given intelligence. They certainly have good intelligence but such intelligent men are meant to be trained as Brahmins to become experts in the Vedic scriptures so they can learn and teach actual scientific knowledge which can really solve all the problems of the people on this planet. When people become frustrated with material life there has to be someone to tell them about spiritual life so these intelligent men should be doing this. They should use their intelligence to study the Vedas, to become Krishna conscious themselves and then to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world. But instead the scientists are misusing their good intelligence and are encouraging people to become more and more animalistic.

There is an Evolution of Consciousness, not an evolution of species

According to the Vedic knowledge there is evolution but it is not evolution of the species as Darwin proposed, but evolution of consciousness. As the fossil record clearly shows there are no intermediate forms between one species and another. The Padma Puranadescribes there are 8,400,000 species of life within this universe. Every species is existing at all times but they may not all be present on any given planet. There are unlimited planets in this one universe and we have information that beyond this universe there are unlimited other universes also. This universe is one of the smallest. There are many universes much larger than this one. But everywhere in the material creation these 8,400,000 species of life exist. The forms already exist on the subtle platform even if they are not physically manifested. This universe is going through cycles. Sometimes it is manifested and sometimes it is unmanifested but even when there is no manifested material world all the forms of the 8,400,000 species of life are still there on the subtle platform.

Every species of life is one step on the ladder of the evolution of consciousness. The soul in every species of life is equal in quality and quantity with the others, it is only due to the consciousness of a particular living entity that he takes a higher or lower body. If I ask the real questions one is meant to in this human form of life, which are: “Who am I?

What is the purpose of life? What is spirit? Who is God?” then I am bound to be elevated to a higher platform of consciousness in the next life.

Evolution working backwards?

If, however, I misuse this human form of life and live like the monkeys, simply looking for the material necessities of life: namely eating, sleeping, sex life and defense, then I am no better than a monkey and I will take a monkeys body in the next life.

The scientists don’t know about this “backward” evolution. They are heading backwards in the evolution of consciousness because they are using their God-given intelligence for facilitating the animal propensities in an advanced, scientific way instead of using it for advancing spiritually. As a result of their misuse of their intelligence they are going backwards on the evolutionary path and will find themselves in the bodies of monkeys in their next lives.

About the Author

My first contact with a Hare Krishna was a most merciful Mataji in Oxford Street, London who sold me a "Higher Taste" cook book in 1984 while I was on holidays there. I started seriously reading Srila Prabhupada's books in Australia 1985 and by 1986 Srila Prabhupada had convinced me "Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead" and "we should surrender to Krishna." I joined the Hare Krishnas in Perth, Western Australia in 1986. Since then I have been chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, reading and distributing Srila Prabhupada's books and preaching as much as I can. That's my life and full-time occupation now really. I like it more than anything I've ever experienced before. Srila Prabhupada's books are so amazing... Even after reading them all many times they're still fresh and new. They are truly transcendental! That's it really. Now I'm just hankering to once again see the world chant Hare Krishna, dance and feast and float away in the ecstasy of Lord Caitanya's Sankirtana movement as it did in Srila Prabhupada's physical presence. Let the whole world drown in the ecstatic flood of love of Krishna!

I fully agree that the concept of man evolving from monkeys is ridiculous, this concept from west was to create confusion among the followers of traditional Indian culture and literature(e.g Veda).

  2. naopikkas says:

inspite of all the association with Prabhupada n how much a pure devotee love someone how come the disciples of Prabhupada so demoniac n not a single pure devotee left

    • Yes. It is because, as Srila Bhaktsiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur has said, after the disappearance of the empowered spiritual master the Putanas, demons, take charge of the pulpits, and there is nothing you can do to stop this. So that is what has happened in ISKCON. Demons have taken up all the responsible leadership positions and they drive away any sincere devotees, so the result is that, at least among the leaders of ISKCON, there are only demons to be found there. Of course some sincere genuine ordinary devotees are attracted because the demons use Prabhupada and his books like fishermen use a worm as bait on their hook. But the sincere devotees either get turned to the demonic side by the demonic ISKCON leadership or they leave disgusted.

Hare Krsna !!!!! Dandvat Pranam Prabhu jee.

Pls. accept my humble obeisances on to your lotus feet.I found your explanation on Darvin’s theory of Evolution very interesting. Today I could understand where is this theory wrong. Prabhu jee, I came to know the followings about spirit soul:
The spirit soul which is the part and parcel of Supreme Personalty of God Head is nothing but the consciousness. It is spreaded through out the body of a living being. It can be contracted to a point also through some process like yoga or medidation. The degree of consciousness i.e. its blissfulness, knowledge, purification etc. decides the quality of soul. So the souls in different species vary in their quality but remain same in quantity. Since I accept your authority of knowledge in the subject matter, please advise me where I am wrong.

    • Hare Krishna Rasik Murari Prabhu

Yes. You are correct it is a question of consciousness. We are the spirit soul and the consciousness of the spirit soul determines the type of material body he gets. So a spiritual soul with a low level of consciousness will get a low body like a plant for example and another spirit soul who has more elevated consciousness will get the body of an animal and a spirit soul with even more elevated consciousness will get the body of a human being. It works like that. And in the human form of life we have the opportunity to raise or lower our level of consciousness. So that consciousness at the time of death determines the body we will get in our next life.

Prabhu, I have some questions, could you kindly answer me? Question 1) why did god create us?, if he creates us to be worshiped, then why did he send us to this earth where we have to struggle for our existence, beside his worshiping, rather he could send us to vagbatdham, his eternal place where we can worship or serve him easily. All over it is amazing to think that who is the creator of this universe seek such help from man, is he not able to serve himself ? If a tiger kills a goat he does not commit sin, no other animals commit sin except man, so at the very begging point of life hood , have we to believe that only man was the first living being of all, that’s why he commits sin first and send to the earth to suffer ? I think he created everything and let them to do their duties that is struggle in life for existence, then they should do whatever to survive and that will be their first and vital duties that is the duties of human being like other animals in this world. That’s why it is said that animals can do anything else to survive and that would not be sin…I am waiting for your feedback

    • There is no point in asking a question if you are going to answer it yourself. It does not matter what you think. If you are asking a question then it means you don’t know the answer. First you have to find someone who does know the answer and ask him and accept what he says. Otherwise it is all useless.

As far as us we are not created. We have the same nature as Krishna, we are eternal, unborn and we do not die. So there is no question of the creation of the living entities. As Krishna is always there so the living entities are also always there.

We are constitutionally small and Krishna is constitutionally unlimited in every respect. So it is the business of the small living entities to serve the great living entity. That is our purpose. We are meant for service. We are meant for serving Krishna.

But we do have a little independence. We are like Krishna in quality but we are very tiny and Krishna is very great. So as Krishna is unlimited independent, we, as parts and parcels of Krishna, also have a very minute amount of independence.

So we can surrender to Krishna and serve Him or we can rebel and try to become the master ourselves. But what will Krishna do with us if we rebel. There is no place for rebels in the spiritual world. So Krishna has very mercifully created this material world for us, the rebels.

It is like a prison house, it is not meant to be a happy comfortable place, it is meant for reformation. It is a place of misery and death, a place of suffering and pain. That is the what the material world is. You can not be happy here. That is not possible. It is not meant for happiness. It is meant for suffering.

After many, many lifetimes of suffering in the material world a thoughtful living entity realizes that there is no point trying to be happy in the material world and he realizes Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and he surrenders to Krishna and goes back home, back to Godhead.

So the material world is for getting out of. And the material world is an unpleasant place full of misery and death to encourage us to wake up and go back home back to Godhead.

    Hare Krishna

In bhagavad Gita chapter 5 text 4, i was surprised to see what I saw, “Only the ignorant speak of devotional service as being different from the analytical study of the material world. Those who are actually learned say that he who applies himself well to one of these paths achieves the results of both.” In the purpot, prabhupada corroborates and it is worth a read.Scientists are only trying to figure out the course of the world. Though it is speculation, it has surprisingly come to conclude that matter is energy (e=mc2) and matter could be controlled by thoughts (double slit and single slit experiments) They use reasonable methods to prove the point, and these days they have lost their former pansophism and are leaving room for productive thoughts for pantheism-; many famous quotes by einstein and similar scientists and newton’s story of the model of solar system appearing by itself, when his friend said he didnt believe in God. Krsna means all attractive, and He says that it is by my energy that the earth stays in its orbit, and i also enter into the atom. the attractive gravitational forces between the sun and earth, and the charges on protons, electrons, have an intrinsic propensity to attract. “attract” is a quality of Krsna, and it is by his energy that the electrons are attracted toward the centre, but do not collide. Only by his energy the earth is moving in its orbit.

Though some scientists are obstinate, the tide is chnging and people are leaving room for open discussion. Scientists today emphasize that there theories “might” be true or have a possibility of so, and admit three faults, just like prabhupada pointed out, of imperfect senses, instruments, and brains. But we must also appreciate their service to Krsna, in that the computer with which I am writing is made by them, allowing vaishnavas to share the nectar even in remote countries!

    Hare Krsna, kindly advise.

    • Hare Krishna!

Yes. Science could be used to explain the glories of Krishna. But science is not being used for that. Today science is demonic. They have formulated science in such a way that you can not make a scientific theory that things are created by and ultimately controlled by God. That is the fact actually. That is the real truth, the real science. But today’s demonic science will not allow such a thought. So it is useless. The technology is not a product of science. This is Kali-yuga, it is the age of machines. That is predicted thousands of years ago in the Vedas. So in the Kali-yuga the machines naturally come. Krishna gives some man the inspiration to ‘discover’ the means of producing the machines. The credit for the computer does not go to science, the credit belongs to Krishna who gave the intelligence to the man who discovered the computer.

I fully agree to the views expressed in the above article. In fact I feel it has been a western conspiracy to undo the importance of Indian philosophy and create a sense of disbelief in what is mentioned in our sacred literature like Vedas, Gita, Puran, etc. This perhaps would help them to propagate their western faith and lifestyle.

I have also being studying about Darwin’s theory in my school’s science book. Its all about diversity in living organisums. But you wrote true and made it very clear that the missing links are still not found. Still we have many questions to scientist which are not answered by them giving an statement that “as time will pass, world will develoup, you’ll get your answers”, as they think a more brave world will be developd and when we ask our science teacher something which has no answer she says,”it’s natural !!!”, i have to accept it beacause if i’ll say its by the divine’s mercy they will say me a idiot beacuse they dont know the real reason and want to be the supreme themselves. The questions like, “who is god, what is Soul, etc” are kept aside and questions like,”what is diameter of space, what is depth of ocean, etc” are always asked very interestingly. People dont want to take interest in spiritual life but in scientific life. They dont understand that all kind of knowledge which is needed for a human being is available in our vedas and spiritual books. I have a great interest in them but people around me have the opposite! , that’s why I love to read your mails which gives me relief that still there are people doing right.
Always deep respecting and thanking you prabhu ji

    • Your realizations are very nice.

Yes. The real reason the atheists so much like Darwin’s theory is that it provides a ‘scientific’ explanation as to how the species of life could have developed simply by chance with no intelligence of superior direction involved. So this theory of evolution is the religion of the atheists. It does not matter to them that there is no proof for evolution and that there are so many things that disprove evolution actually, and that actually there is God, there is a supreme intelligence under Who’s direction everything is acting. The only business of the atheists is to banish God at all cost. So that is why they so much like the theory of evolution, because it eliminates God from the picture. That is all. They do not want to accept that there is anyone greater than themselves. They do not want to admit that there God, a Supreme Person to Whom they will ultimately have to surrender to…

By Lord Krishna’s grace I’m a teacher in a school and I’m happy to say that some students, especially the smaller ones, do ask the questions like, “Is there a God?”, ” Where does God live?” one 6th class student even asked me, “does God live in Vaikuntha?” I was taken by surprise and I said yes to him. I asked him who told this to you and he said his grandmother. Similarly, one girl confidently says there is Yamaraja who punishes sinners and doesn’t care if someone tells otherwise, even his grandfather says oh heaven and hell are only on earth but I don’t think she likes to hear this. Some students are very happy to know that there is a God and I’m sure they like me for saying this. They agree with me that Vedas are right in stating that Solar eclipses are caused by Rahu and not Moon and that science is wrong.

But as these students grow, they will be brainwashed to accept the bogus theories of science and they will forget about God accepting their teachers who teach them that “there is nothing special going on here” as shown in The Spark of Life documentary on Krishna Tube. It seems their parents also want them to be told these bogus things so that they don’t have think about God and only have to think about earning money and becoming famous.

I seek blessings of devotees so that I may be able to let some children of Krishna know that they are actually the children of Krishna and that they must listen to Krishna and surrender to Him and not to their false fathers and mothers.

    Hare Krishna Sandhya

It does not matter if you agree or disagree. We have to hear it from the acharyas, the authorities, the ones who know. And they tell us that our purpose is only to render service to Krishna.

This idea that “Krishna created us” is a materialistic idea. Of course Krishna is the cause of all causes so He is the cause of us also. So in this sense the idea that Krishna creates us comes. But actually we and Krishna are of the same eternal spiritual quality. As Krishna is unborn and beginningless and endless, so are we.

As you say we are all the parts of God, but what you may not realized is the purpose of the parts of God is to serve God, to give enjoyment to God. It is like in our body we have many parts. Like the hands for instance are meant to serve the whole body. The hands can not enjoy by themselves. If they hands are holding a nice sweet the hands can not enjoy it themselves, they have to put it in the mouth and then when it goes to the stomach the stomach will digest it and the energy will be spread out all over the body and in that way the the hands will enjoy the sweet. So, like that, we are all parts and parcels of Krishna, and, like the hands, we have no ability to enjoy separately from Krishna. When we serve Krishna, if we can satisfy Krishna, then that satisfaction of Krishna will also make us satisfied because we are all parts and parcels of Krishna.

So it is not that because we are parts of god the we are god. No. Because we are parts of God it is our purpose and our duty to serve God. God is the master and we are His servants. We are meant to be enjoyed by God. God is the enjoyer and we are the enjoyed.

    Hare Krishna Prabhu:

Interesting article, but I wanted to enquirer about some of your statements. This here:

“Scientists are actually misusing their God-given intelligence. They certainly have good intelligence but such intelligent men are meant to be trained as Brahmins to become experts in the Vedic scriptures so they can learn and teach actual scientific knowledge which can really solve all the problems of the people on this planet”.

The process is to surrender to a “bona fide” Spiritual Master. Then get trained as a Brahmin. You are just as guilty of impersonalism as the next guy, because you do not push this point enough. This is the part of training that makes or breaks the disciple. There are many “Brahmin trainings” going on, on this planet, but how many are being trained by the bona fide Spiritual Master like Lord Srila Prabhupada? He is the Savior for the next ten thousand years, and until this part of knowledge is being distributed to the people, what is the point of all these dry and speculative writings?

“That is because there are 8,400,000 species of life and these species are fixed. It is the consciousness of the particular living entity, spirit soul, at the time of death, or the time he leaves the body, that determines the type of body he will be placed into in his next birth” (Bhaktivedanta).

In this next statement, you need to state your source of information. Where do you get this information from? It is obvious you were not born with it. Being an assistance instructor at a college of sociology, I am constantly preaching to way- warded professors and scientists. But, my success is in introducing them to Lord Srila Prabhupada, not just the knowledge of the Vedas.

I notice you did not up load my last letter to you, so I take that as your insecurities with the real truth. The European and American Caucasian bodies and mentalities cannot accept the Savior as a Spiritual Being in a “body of color”. I have come across pictures and deities of Lord Srila Prabhupada being bleached “white”. I found your consciousness no different. Lord Srila Prabhupada is even better than “white” jesus christ, because He gave us everything concerning knowledge of the world and universes; Spiritual and the material worlds. I am not expecting you are going to print this post either, because you are afraid of the “real” truth: THAT LORD SRILA PRABHUPADA IS THE NEW SAVIOR OF THIS PLANET FOR THE NEXT TEN-THOUSAND YEARS!

    Hare Krishna! dear Madhudvisa Prabhu,

    Please accept my humble obeisances!
Very interesting and thought provoking article. Actually both Science and spiritualism can not completely explains the perfect knowledge and interactions of GOD, LIFE and materialism Both have plus and negative points. We can not completely ruled out the theory of evolution nor spirituality can satisfactorily describe every things about universe. Truth can be better understood by bridging the both. Human life span is too short to ‘see’ evolution himself. Science itself can not explain each and every aspects of life and its control. However, there is no doubt about the facilities provided by the development of technology. The very fine demarcation between living and non living have completely abolished. Biotechnological advancements have completely changed our out look at the cost of peace, happiness and love at every levels of the universe. Our life can be more meaningful and purposeful if both science and spirituality are brought together. But the fundamental question is who will do it? I think both have to come together for the betterment of world and finally the universe. This is high time for such activities.
    Hare Krishna ! Hare Krishna!

    • Hare Krishna Dr. Goswami

‘Science’ is useless. It has not helped us in any way at all. It has simply created a hellish and completely demoniac world where everyone is suffering many times more than before the so-called advancements of science.

As far as evolution there is a type of evolution, and that is a spritual evolution. There is no evolution of the bodies. The 8,400,000 species of life are fixed and are eternal. These species will all again come into existence in the next creation after everything in the universe we can see is destroyed. So the different species are stored on the subtle platform. They are there and they come out at the right time. But the spirit souls, the living entities are evolving through the different species of life. So that is evolution.

Also in the creation of the universe in the beginning everything is covered with water, so in the beginning there are only aquatic creatures, but as the land comes out then the insects and plants and animals and everything up to the human beings come into existence. The forms of all the species of life are always there in the subtle energy and as soon as the physical situation is OK for them then they become manifest.

All this population of the universe is being done under the direction of Lord Brahma and the Prajapatis. So it is directed and managed by them.

Anyhow technology is ugra-karma, horrible activities meant to destroy the world. But of course there is an element of truth in what you say. The technology also is not created by the scientists. That is also automatically coming out, because this Kali-yuga is the age of technology. So Krishna is giving the intelligence to the scientists to discover these technological wonders, they are not creating anything, just discovering what Krishna has already put there. And there is a lot more technology they have not yet discovered. We are still very primitive in technological terms.

But this technology complicates life, it does not simplify it, still as you suggest, we are using it in the service of Krishna.

Keeping sacred books in sacred places is advised, however if there is inadequate space then you may keep in best available place. Most importantly your heart should be firmly attached to the sacredness of the book, and should always feel that LORD KRISHNA is with you in all locations. Good and bad are relative gestures, complete surrender to LORD KRISHNA will overcome all problems.

The extent of diversity in structure and functions of the environment and the living organisms is a classical example of HIS-LORD KRISHNA’S creation. Inspite of all types of advances in science and technology man has not yet been able to create any form of sustainable life form, because that is the domain of the LORD and Brahamaji.

    • A devotee avoids the non-devotees and does not try to preach to them. He finds the innocent people who are interested in hearing about Krishna and speaks about Krishna to them and he finds the more advanced devotees and associates with them and hears from them.

So the atheists are there and will always be there. We have nothing to do with them, we do not associate with them, we avoid them.

  24. khial says:

All creatures have chemistry differences but life has no chemistry?

    • No. Life has no chemistry. Chemistry means a mixture of chemicals. And life is not at all a mixture of chemicals. Life is the spirit soul whose presence within the body animates and pervades the whole body as consciousness and it is the soul leaving the body that causes the “death” of the body. Without he soul, the consciousness, the life, the body is simply a lump of rotting chemistry on the ground. The chemistry is in the body. But the body is not alive. The body only seems to be alive when the spirit soul is present in it and is pervading the body with its consciousness and energy.

So life is spiritual and has absolutely no chemistry…

  25. khial says:

Humans source of knowledge is changing with passage of time but nature exists in its own explained form…..

    • Hare Krishna Khial

Yes, that is the problem with human sources of knowledge that are obtained by the so-called ‘scientific’ process of observation and experimentation. The problem is this so-called knowledge is always changing. And what does that mean? Actually if it is changing it means it wrong. Otherwise there would be no reason to change it. So that is the problem with scientific so-called knowledge. It is all wrong. Because it has been gathered through instruments, the senses of the human body, which are themselves imperfect and limited. So knowledge gathered through imperfect and limited senses will by definition always be imperfect and limited.

So every piece of knowledge that ‘science’ gives us will always be imperfect and limited.

In contrast to this the Vedic knowledge never changes. The Vedic knowledge is eternally perfect. So there is never any need for change. The Vedic knowledge is perfect because it is not arrived at by any effort of imperfect creatures using their imperfect senses. The Vedas is not a product of any human effort. It is handed down in the disciplic succession from Krishna to Lord Brahma, then from Brahma to Narada Muni, then Narada Muni to Vyassadeva, from Vyasadeva to Sukadeva Goswami, etc. So the Vedic knowledge is a process of transmission of perfect knowledge that originates from Krishna.

This is the only way we can get real knowledge. We have to get knowledge from a perfect person who actually has the knowledge.

We will never be able to discover perfect knowledge, or any substantial knowledge at all really, by our own efforts of observation and experimentation, the ‘scientific process’. This is doomed to failure because practically we can not observe anything to speak of. To explain this the example of a frog in a well is given. The frog was born and has spent his whole life at the bottom of that well. For him that well is his universe and he knows nothing else. All he has seen is that round circle up at the top of the well which is sometimes dark and sometime bright and very occasionally very bright when the sun happens to be directly over his well and he has no doubt spotted some stars at night and maybe very rarely got a glimpse of the moon when it once passed over the top of his well. In the harvest season he has heard the rumblings of the farmers machinery as he harvests his crops around the well.

And of course our frog is a scientist and he has speculated and come up with a whole cosmology and universal view and a philosophy an view of the universe as he sees it through the hole in the top of his well… But what can he see actually? How can he conceive that above his well there are fields and a farmer grows and harvests grains there for the people in the city to eat? He has no concepts. None of these things exist in his universe. He can not even imagine such things…

So our scientists in their attempts to understand the universe are no better than the frog in the well. As the frog really can not see anything substantial and therefore has no actual information that would enable him to get any real understanding of the universe and how it works, because he can not see anything… The scientists, similarly, can not see anything at all substantial of the universe so they have no way of being able to understand it.

The only way to understand a thing is to hear about it from someone who actually knows about it… And because the Vedas are not products of human efforts but are descending to us from Krishna, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and who knows everything about everything completely, this is a perfect source of knowledge that never needs updating or changing.

    Hare Krishna! dear Madhudvisa Prabhu,

    Please accept my humble obeisances!

The article is spiritually energizing and I agree with all the points. In fact material science of modern day scientists is imperfect, full of limitations & full of flaws. It’s not real science. In comparison, Krishna consciousness is the most perfect, brilliant & awesome science. One just need to practice it under the guidance of a perfect spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada with FAITH to experience the power. We are not these temporary material bodies made up of blood, muscles, bile, bones, serum, but we are eternal spiritual beings. We are spirit souls. Our real nature is completely different from matter. Our gross body requires various macro-nutrients & macro-nutrients like carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, vitamins, fiber, etc. for the proper functioning and maintenance, yet these gross nutrients can’t nourish the real us- Soul. FAITH is the only most important food, nutrient required for the Soul. Without faith in Krishna & Srila Prabhupada’s words one can never understand Krishna’s ULTIMATE science. Krishna is beyond the range of our limited sense perception, He cannot be conceived by exercising our senses.

Mother Kunti prays:”O Kṛṣṇa, I offer my obeisances unto You because You are the original personality and are unaffected by the qualities of the material world. You are existing both within and without everything, yet You are invisible to all.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.18)

“Being beyond the range of limited sense perception, You are the eternally irreproachable factor covered by the curtain of deluding energy. You are invisible to the foolish observer, exactly as an actor dressed as a player is not recognized.” (SB 1.8.19)

The only way to understand Krishna is follow the scientific process of sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam arcanam vandanam dasyam sakhyam atma-nivedanam. To engage in hearing, chanting, reading, Deity worship etc of the All Powerful, Ultimate Being Sri Krishna & engaging our mundane works in His service is the most perfect scientific process. One can realize that just by following the process sincerely for few weeks. Prabhu,I love your articles. You are doing a great service to Srila Prabhupada.

Please keep on sharing these wonderful articles with me. Thank you so much! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

  28. Ratish Krishnamoorthy says:

    Om Namo Vasudevaya!!

Thank you very much for putting lights on many doubts that were on my mind.

I would like to clarify one doubt. We must have got the human life after passing through many inferior life forms. So in those lives we must have done something good or our thought process must have been progressive so that we got the present human form at present. So naturally in this life we should be able to again upgrade our spiritual thought rather than being going backward, because in each life not only our physical form but also our intellect should also go to the next level. But the actual scenario we are seeing is not like that. We can see many humans behaving more worse than animals. So why we are again going backwards in the evolution process after getting such a highest life form like humans. I have heard that even Devas need to take the life of humans to attain the Supreme god. If our present state is so much valuable why most of the humans are not able to develop it?

    • Humans can go forwards or backwards because we have a little independence. So if we use that independence correctly by surrendering to Krishna and serving HIm then we go forward, but if we misuse our independence and try to become the lord and master of the material world ourselves and try to make so many arrangements to enjoy sense gratification here–eating, sleeping, mating and defending–then we go backwards.

  29. Jim p says:

Interesting article, I agree with some of the points made. However I have doubts in what I have read. Using logic, god’s given intelligence, there is a bit of confusion on our purpose on this earth. Is our purpose to be “enjoyers” to seek pleasure in the material world. How can this be possible if you say the only way we can seek pleasure or happiness and the best kind of pleasure or happiness is through serving Krishna. Then why would be want to be on this earth or desire for material things or give up service to him? To say we are envious of god makes no sense. You cannot be envious of god because we are mortal. How does that even work? This leads my to my next point, if our purpose is to enjoy our senses, it seems a bit pointless. Why does god need to create earth to enjoy our senses, that could be done without making earth. It would make more sense if our purpose is a test which explains better why the earth would have been created and our actual purpose. The two cannot co-exist, this life cannot be a test but also an opportunity to maximise our senses.

I disagree with your comments on the effects of science on humanity. Quality of life has improved due to technological and scientifical advances. If you study history you see that evidently. If you look at the average age span and compare is against the past you will see. With general morality I agree with you.

Also could you provide evidence from other sources about regressive evolution?

    • Hare Krishna Jim

You can not understand these things without becoming Krishna consciousness. So the only option for you is to read Srila Prabhupada’s books and chant Hare Krishna and as your consciousness becomes purified these issues will become very clear to you. We have to clear up our consciousness first before we can properly grasp transcendental knowledge.

Although I am not convinced by Darwin’s evolution theory, I do not agree with your one either.

How do you know there are 8,400,000 species of life? In your opinion what is the definition of life? If you know there are these many species you might have the source of information about the details of these lives. What is that reliable source?

You mentioned that the material world is designed to frustrate us, then why did God design it that way? Does He want to frustrate us? why?

Why does God allow our bad thoughts coming to our mind then punish us? Why does He play this trick?

Does He just want to play with us sometime in a cruel and other time in a loving ways as we play with the doll?

    With my best regards,
    Somenath

    • Hare Krishna Somenath

The perfect source of knowledge is the Vedas. Because that is not produced by any imperfect man. It is coming from Krishna. And Krishna is perfect, so the knowledge in the Vedas is perfect. So when Krishna says there are 8,400,000 species of life all over the universe that is perfect and correct knowledge. It is not that they are all present here on this planet. That is the number of species of life in the whole universe.

Yes. The material world is designed to frustrate us. It is not our home and we can never be happy here. It is meant to awaken the thoughtful persons so they ultimately realize there is no point in trying to be happy independently of Krishna, because it is not possible to be happy without serving Krishna. So the frustrations of this material world will ultimately drive thoughtful people to surrender to Krishna. So the frustrations are good actually.

It is not God that is putting the bad thoughts in our minds. We put them there ourselves. We have to learn the science of Krishna consciousness and if we can become Krishna conscious then we will be able to control our minds. Because we have a material body and material senses naturally the senses are agitating the mind and the mind is agitating the intelligence and in this way we become disturbed. While we may not be able to completely stop this agitation by the mind and the senses a Krishna conscious person is calm like a great ocean and even though so many agitating rivers may flow into a great ocean the ocean remains undisturbed.

Krishna is not being cruel to us. We came here to the material world of our own accord. Krishna is mercifully helping us to get out. He is giving us that option and leaving it up to us to chose Him or maya. If we choose Krishna we will be free from all the suffering and problems and if we choose maya the suffering will intensify…

But what about the species like dinosaurs, the mammoth, which are no longer present in the material world? Doesn’t the count reduce then?

    • I never said there are 8,400,000 species on this planet. That is the total number of species in the universe. They all always exist on the subtle platform, but they are not all present here on this planet at the moment. Some are on other planets, etc. But the forms are constant. They are not evolving from one form to another. There are 8,400,000 specific individual species and they will always remain the same. They are however not all present on the one planet at the same time. It is spread all over the universe.

Hare Krishna Madhudvisa,THANK you very much about this mail. I Would like to ask you about the first person on earth, the Bible say it was Adam and Eve(GENESIS 2:7).The rich people are they also not happy on this planet earth? What is their frustration?

    • The first person in the universe is Lord Brahma and I suggest you read Srimad-Bhagavatam to get all the details of the creation of the universe. The Bible is a small book and does no have much detail about the creation. You will find the detail you are looking for in Srimad-Bhagavtam.

Everyone is unhappy on this planet, not just the rich people, the poor people are also unhappy. It is because we are all eternally servants of Krishna, we can only be happy serving Krishna. But here in the material world instead of serving Krishna we are all trying to become the master and get others to serve us. So this is not our natural constitutional position, it is not what we are supposed to be doing and therefore everyone here, rich and poor, they are all unhappy and frustrated.

The frustration can only be cured by be reawakeing our original Krishna consciousness, by again putting ourselves in our eternal natural constitutional position as a servant of Krishna… Then we will be happy.

The human form of life is a great gift from Krishna because in the human form of life we have developed consciousness and we can use this human form of life as a great boat to cross over the ocean of necisence that is this material world. So to destroy a great boat that is able to take us to the other side of the ocean where life is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss would be a very great mistake and a very great sin…

  37. julie says:

Pse can u explain wat is meant by “natural selection”. Thk u haribol

    • Hi Julie

“Natural selection” is a term coined by Charles Darwin and it is the process by that he speculates drives and directs evolution.

The idea of the materialistic evolution theory is that gradually by random mutations one species of life will become transformed into another one. But there has to be something driving this process. So the theory of “natural selection” is that occasionally one of these random mutations causes that particular living entity to have and advantage over the other members of his species. For a crazy example we could consider that a giraffe was once some sort of horse and by some random mutation one horse was born with a longer neck than all the other ones and that means he could reach up higher and get food that was not available to the other horses. And there was some drought so the food became scarce so all the horses with the normal length neck ate all the food they could reach and there was nothing left so they died. But there were a few of these horses with long necks and after all the normal neck horses died because of lack of food they matted together and produced horses with even longer necks and this went on for a while and the horses of course turned into giraffes.

So this is ‘natural selection’ the random mutation of the longer neck of the horse gave him a survival advantage over his fellow horses so he lived and they died. So he got to mate and pass on the mutation to the future generations.

It is a logical explanation but this is not what happens of course. There are always horses and giraffes, they are two completely different species of animal and horses will never turn into any other species. They will always be horses, and giraffes will always be giraffes…

So the scientists idea of ‘natural selection’ is incorrect. It is an incorrect theory. It does work for small traits. Like Darwin was studying finches on the Galapagos islands. There were different islands with different types of food available and he noticed that finches with a particular type of beak were more prominent on an island where that type of beak was advantageous for getting a particular type of food that was available on that island. So it is possible to breed traits into a particular species in this way, by ‘natural selection’. It is done regularly by breeders of animals for hundreds of years. The dairy cow people will breed cows to produce cows that will give a lot of milk for example. So you can do this. By selection particular cows and bulls who have the trait you want to develop and breeding them together you can produce offspring that have improved abilities in particular areas. But they remain the same species. Not that you can create a new species in this way by natural selection.

  38. Vikram says:

One more interesting thing, I did a search on Google about how many species there are on earth, and scientists say anywhere from 5-10 million (one recent study suggested about 8.7 million), so at least they are roughly accurate, based on your figure of 8,400,000.

  39. Vikram says:

    Dear Madhudvisa Dasa,

Very interesting, but then why do so many other religions reject the concept of reincarnation?

As for modern people not being happy, that is so true, many are not. I know I was depressed for many years, even before I got full-blown schizophrenia. Actually, the whole reason I became interested in spirituality is that I was frustrated and depressed, so that bad experience might be a blessing in disguise. As you said in your post, Krishna designed this world to be frustrating so that they would give up this materialistic struggle.

I’ve been aware of that for a while now through Prabhupada’s books and my own experience, but I have to admit I’m still reluctant to become a devotee. I think the main reason is I find it difficult to believe the rituals performed in the temples are actually producing any results. I mean, I know Prabhupada says that when these rituals are performed the deity is entering the murti (that is what the deity figure of metal or wood is called, right?) I know I’m supposed to trust Prabhupada since he is the guru; I just don’t understand why all these forces are hidden from us if Krishna really wants us to believe that the scriptures are his word. Even if we do accept that Krishna is the controller, how do we know that all these rituals are influencing the world?

I want to reject the materialistic struggle, but I don’t know what to replace it with. Should I try to be a modern scientist, but one who accepts he is not the controller, only Krishna is? Should I become a devotee? Is it possible to be both a devotee and a scientist? I know Prabhupada called Krishna consciousness Vedic science, but for something to be scientific it has to be verifiable, so I think that’s probably the main reason for my reluctance to become a devotee—I have no idea how to verify that Krishna is actually entering these deity figures, purifying that prasadam, or even that the scriptures are in fact his word.

How will I know that I am on the true path?

    Vikram

    • Hare Krishna Vikram

Krishna does not appear before the materialists. He hides Himself from the materialists. So if you are a materialist then you will not be able to find Krishna, because you do not want Krishna. The purpose of our life is to surrender to and serve Krishna, but the materialists do not want to do this. They want to become the master themselves and they want people to surrender to and serve them. So for the materialist Krishna will remain hidden forever. As far as the material world is concerned Krishna has created that as a self-contained unit. So the material scientists can study it and come to the conclusion that nature is working independently and they will not find anything that contradicts this assumption. Krishna will remain hidden to them.

So actually to take to Krishna consciousness you need faith. You need the faith that Srila Prabhupada is a pure devotee of Krishna, you need the faith that there is a God, and His name is Krishna, and you need the faith to get the determination to seriously follow the process of saddhana-bhakti, chanting at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily, strictly following the four regulative principles [no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication] and reading Srila Prabhupada’s books at least 1-2 hours a day.

If you can not get this faith and therefore can not follow the regulative principles and chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily then you will not be able to become Krishna conscious. But you can get that faith by hearing. If you simply read Srila Prabhupada’s books and hear his classes submissively and at least theoritically accept that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead then you can develop that faith.

It is all up to you. Krishna hides Himself from the people who do not want to see Him. But Krishna does not hide Himself from His devotees. Krishna’s devotees can see Krishna. But the materialists will only see Krishna as cruel death…

Krishna consciousness is the true path. I can assure you of that. There is no doubt. You simply have to have faith in this. There is no way you can know it is the true path on your own strength. You have to accept this knowledge from an authority, a person who knows. The only way you can know where a path leads is to follow it yourself or to hear from a person who has already followed it. It is better to get the advice from the persons who have already followed the path and reached the destination for they can give you the real, true, authoritative knowledge about the path of Krishna consciousness and they can give you good advice on how to successfully traverse the path and how to avoid any pitfalls.

I am extremely impresssed by this article which echoes the impressions of my mind. Now I am clearer in my ideas regarding these things. The Shankaracharya of Kamakoti peetam at Kancheepuram says that Sri Krishna has ridiculed the attitude of some brahmins who stick to vedic rituals without trying to progress beyond that. He says that it is necessary to go beyond vedic rituals and try to evolve spiritually in the third part of our lives. He also says that it is also wrong to jump to the third part without going through the initial karmakanda period of doing one’s share of ritual practices either.
My question is for the dalits. These people don’t have any ritual practices as they have been thrown out of the Hindu Sphere many centuries ago. So how will they follow ritual practices? They can only follow the jnana marga straight. Isn’t it?

    • Hare Krishna Srividya

Krishna consciousness is so nice that it can be followed by anyone. There is no need for any type of good birth or any previous qualification whatsoever. Anyone can read Srila Prabhupada’s book and understand the science of Krishna consciousness and chant Hare Krishna. And anyone, no matter how low his birth is, if he surrenders to Srila Prabhupada and Krishna and under the direction of Srila Prabhupada follows the path of Bhakti-yoga or Krishna consciousness will very quickly surpass all so-called high-class brahmanas. A vaisnava is higher than any sort of brahmana so anyone of any low birth, if he takes sincerely to Krishna consciousness, is much better than any so-called brahmana without Krishna consciousness.

    hare krsna ..
if person is human in this birth. can one be human in next birth as well???

    • Yes. The human birth is very special. In the animal form of life there is no real independence. Animals simply struggle to fulfill the animistic desires of eating, sleeping, mating and defending. They only work on instinct. So there is no real independence or choice on the part of an animal. Therefore there is no sin for an animal. The animal will simply eat the foodstuffs that it is meant to eat by nature and will act in the way it is directed to act under the thee modes of material nature. So an animal will automatically be elevated to the next higher body in the evolution of consciousness after death.

But human life is special, in the human form of life we have a certain degree of free will and independence. We can make the choice between good and bad, between sinful and pious. So in the human form of life if we chose to act in a good way we will be elevated in the next life and will again receive the human form of life or better or even be elevated to the spiritual world, but if we choose to act in a bad, sinful and animistic way, then we can be degraded to an animal birth in our next life or to a very uncomfortable position suffering in one of the hellish planets.

So in the human form of life we can either elevate ourselves or degrade ourselves. Our next birth is determined by the state of our consciousness at the time of death. So if at the time of death we are thinking of Krishna that is the perfection of our life and we will go back home, back to Godhead, back to Krishna. But if we are thinking like an animal at the time of death, simply concerned with the base animal desires of eating, sleeping, sex and defense, then we will be forced to take an animals body in our next birth…

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!
