The Peace Formula

The Peace FormulaThe sages, knowing Me as the ultimate purpose of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attain peace from the pangs of material miseries.” (Bhagavad Gita 5.29)

Srila Prabhupada called this verse of Bhagavad-gita the “peace formula.” It seems appropriate that we hear something from Srila Prabhupada about how the world can be brought into a peaceful condition now as we seem to be practically on the brink of world war three:

The great mistake of modern civilization is to encroach upon others’ property as though it were one’s own and to thereby create an unnecessary disturbance of the laws of nature. These laws are very strong. No living entity can violate them.

Only one who is Krishna conscious can easily overcome the stringency of the laws of nature and thus become happy and peaceful in the world.

As a state is protected by the department of law and order, so the state of Universe, of which this earth is only an insignificant fragment, is protected by the laws of nature.
buy zovirax

This material nature is one of the different potencies of God, who is the ultimate proprietor of everything that be. This earth is, therefore, the property of God, but we, the living entities, especially the so-called civilized human beings, are claiming God’s property as our own, under both an individual and collective false conception.

If you want peace, you have to remove this false conception from your mind and from the world. This false claim of proprietorship by the human race on earth is partly or wholly the cause of all disturbances of peace on earth.

Foolish and so-called civilized men are claiming proprietary rights on the property of God because they have now become godless. You cannot be happy and peaceful in a godless society. In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna says that He is the factual enjoyer of all activities of the living entities, that He is the Supreme Lord of all universes, and that He is the well-wishing friend of all beings. When the people of the world know this as the formula for peace, it is then and there that peace will prevail.

Therefore, if you want peace at all, you will have to change your consciousness into Krishna consciousness, both individually and collectively, by the simple process of chanting the holy name of God. This is a standard and recognized process for achieving peace in the world. We therefore recommend that everyone become Krishna conscious by chanting:
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

This is practical, simple, and sublime. Four hundred and eighty years ago this formula was introduced in India by Lord Sri Caitanya, and now it is available in your country. Take to this simple process of chanting as above mentioned, realize your factual position by reading the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, and reestablish your lost relationship with Krishna, God. Peace and prosperity will be the immediate worldwide result.

Dear Hare Krishna I am not able to control my anger or my short temper which creating a very negative effect in my personal and my professional life. I have already faced a lot of critical and complicated problems due to this behaviour but still m not able to understand y am I not changing. I want peace sometimes I would like too move away to some where alone and stay with The Lord but I have family which is broken now I need to make it together. Please advise me as to what would be correct. I am able to control myself in situations but the situations are so demanding or so irritating that I am breaking out of my peace and getting disturbed for long times. Help me Hare Krishna

    • The answer is just to become Krishna conscious. When we become Krishna conscious we can realize we are not the material body so we will no longer get angry or irritated because we know we are not our material bodies and we no longer take seriously the people who are still acting on the bodily concept of life.

There is a saying that Srila Prabhupada uses: “The dogs may bark but the caravan will go on.” So the idea is like that. If dogs bark then we do not take it seriously, that is what dogs do, they bark… So we do not take any notice of it and we do not feel angry or irritated when dogs bark and we do not think badly of dogs because they bark.

So with the people who are in the material concept of life, when they ‘bark’ at us we do not take it seriously. We just give them some prasadam and get them to chant Hare Krishna and read Srila Prabhupada’s books. So if we do the same things, only accept Krishna prasadam, always chant Hare Krishna, never forget Krishna, follow the regulative principles, etc, we will gradually become free from the bodily concept of life and there will be not agitation.

It is very hard to stay alone. It is better to stay with devotees.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

The only thing that will satisfy you is to become Krishna conscious. We are all eternally servants of Krishna. We will never be satisfied doing anything at all until we return to our natural eternal position of serving Krishna.

So read Srila Prabhupada’s books and learn the science of Krishna consciousness and seriously practice it in your life and you will become satisfied. There is no other way that you can ever be satisfied. Krishna consciousness is the only way.

Hare Krsna.Keep up the good work

    • Hare Krishna Claude

Yes. You will advance in Krishna consciousness much more quickly if you read Srila Prabhupada’s books aloud and hear them and chant them. The most important processes for our advancement in Krishna consciousness are hearing and chanting. We become Krishna consciousness by hearing and chanting much more than by thinking. It is not so much an intellectual process. Krishna consciousness is about reawakening our dormant love for Krishna. That love for Krishna we already have within our hears. It simply has to be uncovered. And the process for this is hearing and chanting. So if we read Srila Prabhupada’s books aloud we are chanting and we hear it also so we are also hearing. And we are still thinking about it in our mind. So instead of just thinking if we read it in our mind we are also chanting and hearing if we read aloud. So reading aloud is much, much better…

And you can read the Sanskrit and Bengali verses also and those verses are mantras and have transcendental potency. So it is far, far more powerful to chant and hear the mantras, you don’t really get so much benefit by just looking at a mantra and thinking it in your mind, but you get a huge benefit by chanting and hearing the mantra…

So I recommend you read Prabhupada’s books aloud so you can chant them and hear them as well as think about them.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

  11. Nailesh G Joshi says:

Hare Krishna dandvat pranam prabhu ji,

How some one can remain in material world & still he or she can be untouched with material thing’s. We are chanting 16 rounds entire family daily. But still some time some where we are finiding attached to the material things & we are drivin by maya in material life, this is causing hinderance in bhakti life. So, enlighten how can we get rid of maya (or matierl things).

    Hare Krishna dandvat pranam..

    • Hare Krishna Nailesh

It is wonderful Prabhu that your whole family is chanting 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra a day. It is so nice that you are creating your own temple, your own ashram in your home, which is Krishna’s temple now I presume.

As far as material things this is the material world and we have material bodies and there are so many material things all around us. We do not want to get rid of material things, and in the material world it is not possible to get rid of material things.

We have to understand that everything is Krishna’s energy and these ‘material’ things are also Krishna’s energy. They are Krishna’s things. And Krishna’s things should be utilized to glorify and serve Krishna. That is the secret. Not that we want to get rid of material things but that we want to utilize all material things in the service of Krishna. This is called ‘yukta-vairagya’ or practical renunciation.

It is not practical to get rid of material things. You could say that food is material and you want to give up food. But then your material body would ‘die’ and then you would not be able to serve Krishna with it. The reality is that even our bodies are not our own. Actually everything belongs to Krishna. So our bodies, they also belong to Krishna. So we have to provide the food to sustain Krishna’s material body that we currently find ourselves within so we can use Krishna’s body to serve Krishna.

And gradually as we see all the material energy as Krishna’s energy and as we engage the material energy in Krishna’s service the ‘material’ energy will loose its material qualities and start to act spiritually.

To explain this point Srila Prabhupada often gives the example of an iron rod. And iron rod is iron. But if you put the iron rod in a fire gradually the iron rod becomes hotter and hotter until it is red hot. When the iron rod is red-hot then it no longer acts as an iron rod. It acts as fire. If you touch that red-hot iron rod to anything it will burst into flames. The iron rod is now acting as fire.

So the material energy is likened to the fire and engaging the material energy in the service of Krishna is like keeping the iron rod in the fire and so the time comes when the material energy will also act spiritually by the association of Krishna consciousness.

So we have to learn this art of transforming the material energy into spiritual energy and this science is very nicely explained by Srila Prabhupada in his books. We have to read Srila Prabhupada’s books. We will find all the answers in Srila Prabhupada’s books..

  13. Johnson says:

Why is it that when one is reading the Gita or you are on meditation that different things will be coming into the mind to disturb one? Sir how can one stop this negative thoughts and forces? Many thanks

    • Hare Krishna Johnson

It is natural when we try to concentrate on spiritual things, when we try to chant Hare Krishna and when we try to read Srila Prabhupada’s books that our mind will get disturbed sometimes and unwanted things will come into our minds. This is because there is so much nonsense in our minds from all of our materialistic activities that as soon as we try to concentrate on spiritual things then some of this nonsense stored in our minds comes up to disturb us.

It is maya trying to distract us from Krishna consciousness. So the way to control the mind is to neglect it. We just have to continue reading Prabhupada’s books and chanting Hare Krishna and just ignore the nonsense that is coming up in our mind. It is sometimes difficult. But we just have to tolerate that difficulty and keep on reading Srila Prabhupada’s books and keep on chanting Hare Krishna. And as we read Prabhupada’s books and chant Hare Krishna more and more our minds become purified and they will not disturb us so much any more.

So it is not unusual that your mind is disturbing you like this and the solution is to just ignore your mind and go on with your Krishna conscious activities undisturbed. And if you do this in a very determined way you will see that soon your mind will become under control and not disturb you any more.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

    Hari Bol

    • Hare Krishna Vanshika

Thank you for reading the newsletters.

You say that we have to realize that this world is false and that everything belongs to Krishna. Everything belongs to Krishna for sure, but this world is not false. That is the philosophy of the Mayavadis. The Mayavadis say brahma satyam jagat mithya–“brahman is truth and this material world is false.” We agree with them that brahman is truth, but we do not agree with their philosophy that this world is false.

It is not false, it is temporary. This material world goes through cycles, it is sometimes manifest and sometimes not manifest. So it is temporary. But it is not false. The material energy is also another energy of Krishna. So as Krishna is truth, then any energy coming from Krishna is also truth. So this material world is also truth.

This explains why devotees, Vaisnavas, have a very different outlook on the world than the Mayavadis. The Mayavadis with their slogan ‘brahman is truth, this world is false’ have to try to completely reject everything of the material world and concentrate on the nothingness of brahman. The Mayavadis believe that ultimately there is no activity, no individuality, no personality. They say all these things are false and they try to give up all these things… It is a horrible life. And of course it is impossible to give up these things as the soul is eternally active and eternally an individual person. So the Mayavadis are working against nature with their bogus philosopy, “brahman is truth, this material world is false.” The material world is not false. It is temporary. It is illusory because the happiness that we search for here in the material world can not be found in the material world. But the material world is not at all false.

The devotees know that the material energy is also Krishna’s energy and it can again regain its original spiritual nature if it is utilized in the service of Krishna. So devotees do not reject the material world as false. No. We see everything in the material world is Krishna’s energy, Krishna’s property, and we want to engage Krishna’s things in the service of Krishna.

If the things of the material world are engaged in the service of Krishna they loose their material nature and become spiritual. So we do not say the material world is false. No. The material energy is also Krishna’s energy and the way to reestablish our loving relationship with Krishna is to engage all these apparently material things in the service of Krishna.

It is a very beautiful philosophy, a very beautiful lifestyle. Engaging everything in the material world in the service of Krishna.

  16. krishnangi Bora says:

    Hare Krishna Prabhuji,
    PAMHO.. Jai Srila Prabhupad,

Prabhuji I want to know that if someone is comitting sins (not in ignorance) as well as doing chanting and following all 4 principles then also he can do spiritual progess easily?
In my life I have seen a lot of such examples and I get very embarrased by these things.

    • If someone is breaking the regulative principles and chanting Hare Krishna at the same time it is very difficult for them to make any spiritual advancement at all. If they are doing it mistakenly or because of bad habits from the past but are actually really seriously and completely engaged in devotional service then such discrepancies are not very serious and will be corrected in due cause of time. They can be considered saintly because they are properly situated in devotional service. However if someone is pretending to be in devotional service but is knowingly engaging in sinful activities and if he has no intention of giving up these sinful activities then that is ‘committing sinful activities on the strength of the holy name.’ That is one of the ten offenses and if we are committing offenses like this it is just like trying to light a fire with one hand and pouring water onto the fire with the other hand. We are not going to get the fire lit in that way.

So really there is no chance of spiritual progress for someone who is purposelessly committing sinful activities like this and posing as a devotee. An actual devotee will not do this. An actual devotee may be fallen in so many ways and may be committing sinful activities because of bad association or bad habits from his previous life but he will feel regretful about this and will always be trying to stop it and will be able to stop it by the power of chanting Hare Krishna.

So there are two types of people. The sincere devotee who has fallen into sinful activities because he has become overcome by maya but really wants to be in Krishna consciousness and really wants to be following the four regulative principles. He is a devotee and will ultimately succeed in his Krishna consciousness and the other person who is the pretender who really has no interest in giving up sense gratification at all but is rather posing as a devotee to give himself the facility for more sense gratification. Such a demon is not a devotee of Krishna at all, he is a disciple of the kali-yuga…

    Dear Madhudvasa

I’ve recently have become interested In Krsna as conduit back to Godhead, Comming from a Catholic background, I long lost any sort of justice in God, I must say the Indian holy scriptures seem to be spiritualy enlightening and purposable, Pointed and Interlectual in a way the Judaistic religions are not.

A friend of mine posted me a Youtube video of Prabhupada debating with a French Catholic Priest about Meat-eating, Because of this Ive given up meat, (6 months now) and I will never go back to it, but I still eat fish, Am I still falling foul of Prabhupada wishes? I really do not want to give up eating Fish.

    Yours Sincerely

    Spencer

    • Hare Krishna Spencer

I was also brought up as a Catholic and although I do not find anything substantially wrong with what they taught me about God it was very limited and I was very happy to discover Srila Prabhupada’s books which provide real tangible information about Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead and a very practical process which enables us to purify our consciousness and easily transcend the material platform and become situated on the transcendental platform.

To seriously practice Krishna consciousness you need to really study Prabhupada’s books and come to understand what Krishna consciousness is and what is the process you have to follow if you want to become Krishna conscious. It is a scientific process and like any other scientific process there is a procedure that one has to follow if he wants a successful outcome. And if one is not prepared to follow this process then the outcome will not be successful.

So the very basic prerequisites for someone who wants to make advancement in Krishna consciousness is that he must voluntary agree to following the four regulative principles (no illicit sex, no meat, fish or eggs, no gambling and no intoxication) and chant the Hare Krishna mantra daily on beads at least 16 rounds and read Srila Prabhupada’s books at least 1-2 hours a day. This level of commitment one has to have otherwise he will make practically no advancement. Without accepting these principles and chanting at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily it is sentimentalism, not spirituality.

So to become Krishna conscious you have to surrender to Srila Prabhupada. It does not matter what you want or what you think. You may want to eat fish but that is against the regulative principles and unless you give this up then you will not be able to advance in Krishna consciousness. Breaking the regulative principles and trying advance in Krishna consciousness at the same time is like trying to light a fire with one hand and pouring water on it with the other. In that way you will never be able to light the fire. So until you are prepared to surrender to the process then you will be stuck where you are more-or-less. You will not be able to experience or understand what Krishna consciousness is.

It depends on surrender, and surrender to the right person. If you surrender to the wrong person, someone who is not a pure devotee of Krishna, then you will be in trouble also. But Srila Prabhupada is the right person and if you surrender to him and read his books and follow the instructions you find Prabhupada giving you as you read his books then you will be in very safe hands and you will find yourself making rapid spiritual advancement and you will feel wonderful.

But nothing will happen until you surrender… Until you are prepared to give up the things you like and instead do the things Krishna likes…

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

One more thing i feel sleepy in the morning and by backbone aches by sitting for a long time and so i feel i am forcefully doing it . But i really want to do it and then increase the no. of times. I want to forget this body at that time. Pl guide my mind…

    • Hare Krishna Lipsa

Keep chanting Hare Krishna. Do not stop. You do not have to chant loudly but you have to be able to hear your chanting. So you have to actually vibrate the words of the Hare Krishna mantra. The process is hearing. So you have to be able to hear it. But it does not have to be loud. But it has to be loud enough so you can hear it. And try to increase your chanting to 16 rounds a day and also read Srila Prabhupada’s books at least 1-2 hours a day and strictly follow the four regulative principles [no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication]. Krishna consciousness is a package deal. You have to follow all the elements if you want really to make significant spiritual advancement. It is very important to read Srila Prabhupada’s books because by reading the books you will understand the philosophy behind the changing and that will give you the determination and strength to keep chanting Hare Krishna even when you may otherwise find it difficult.

Of course you may not be able to do everything all at once but you have to have this plan and you need to work towards adjusting your life so you can fit in the chanting, reading Prabhupada’s books and strictly following the regulative principles in your life. If you want to become Krishna conscious you have to do these things and if you are sincere Krishna will help you also.

I want to ask you about a common problem I face, it often happens that a negative image or thought occupies my mind, it becomes difficult for me to convince my mind to get out of it. I only try imagining lord krishna’s lotus feet.
But is there any way I can totally avoid negativity and concentrate on lord krishna completely.
    Thanks you.

    • By chanting Hare Krishna constantly. Kirtaniya sada hari… There’s no point trying to imagine Krishna’s lotus feet. You can not become Krishna conscious by imagining. You become Krishna conscious by hearing. Sruti. So chant Hare Krishna and hear it — that is the way to control the mind. Krishna’s lotus feet will automatically appear in your mind when that time comes. You can not force it. Of course by seeing the Deity of Krishna in the temple or the paintings of Krishna that will impress the image of Krishna in our minds. But this seeing is not so important. The process is hearing. Hearing the Hare Krishna mantra and hearing of the glories of Krishna from books like Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam… all of Prabhupada’s books. So you hear the Hare Krishna mantra and hear Prabhupada’s books by reading them aloud preferably. This hearing of the Hare Krishna mantra and the glories of Krishna will control your mind.

Of course it goes without saying that you have to be chanting at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily and following the four regulative principles [no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication] to control your mind. Without these things it will not be possible to control our minds…

I regard Krishna to be my benefactor. I am in great pain. I can not tolerate it. I am constantly trying to chant His name. I am in such pitiable condition that I am even failing to chant His name in a proper way. Your mercy is my only hope. I will be obliged Oh Lord, if You help this helpless creature.

Hare krishna !!!!!!!!!!! HARI BOL !!!!!!!!!!! HAPPY DIPAWALI !!!!!!!!

in connection to chanting harekrishna mahamantra , what are the condition to look after because if u are chanting u should be pure and humble state of mind( if we are doing sinful activities how can we chant at same time.)

People who are earning black money AND evolved in corruption can not take the name of god for long time.

      • Hare Krishna Sameer

None of us are pure and in a humble state of mind in the beginning. It is only by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and by the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha mantra that we can become pure and humble. So it is not that we have to wait to become pure and humble before we start chanting Hare Krishna. NO. NO. NO. There are no hard and fast rules for chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and it can be chanted in any condition of life. So even if we are not pure and not humble we should still chant Hare Krishna. However the chanting is much more powerful if it is done offenslessly. And the effects of the chanting will be very much reduced if we do not follow the four regulative principles [no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication]. Chanting Hare Krishna and breaking the regulative principles is like trying to light a fire while pouring water on it at the same time. It will not have much effect…

So it is very important to read Srila Prabhupada’s books at least 1-2 hours a day, to chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily and to strictly follow the four regulative principles (no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication) but even if we are not doing these things perfectly still we should never stop chanting:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
