The Science of God

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego–all together these eight comprise My separated material energies. (Bhagavad-gita 7.4)

The Bhagavad-gita is not giving only spiritual knowledge. It is also giving us information about this material world and how it is working. This is science, material science as well as spritual science. So the Bhagavad-gita gives knowledge of everything, both material and spiritual.

Here, in this verse, Krishna describes His “separated material energies”. So this means He is describing the material energy. Krishna’s internal energy is His spritual energy and the material energy is called Krishna’s separated energy.

Because actually, generally speaking, Krishna does not have anything directly to do with the material world. He has organized it in such a nice way that the material world is run by the various demigods who are put into their positions by Krishna and whose business it is to oversee the smooth running of the various departments of universal management.

We can understand from the Bhagavad-gita that the universe is going on under intelligent control. Although Krishna calls the material energy his external energy and although He is not directly in contact with it, He has his representatives, the demigods, in management positions in every department of the universe to ensure that things are running according to plan.

We know it for a fact that in the material world if something is left alone without proper management and organization there is a tendency to disorder. If you don’t clean your room for six months and just throw everything on the floor randomly then you are going to create a big mess. You are not going to create anything beautiful, orderly and organized like the material world. So it is insanity to suggest that this universe is created and is going on simply by random chance. You can not have anything organized and running very punctually and exactly without good management. The universe is working on very exact timings and the arrangements are very perfectly made. And everything keeps working also so that means the required adjustments and corrections are also being made by the intelligent demigods who are managing all the aspects of the functioning of the universe under the direction of Krishna.

So the big difference between Vedic science and Western science is in the Vedas we get the information that everything is going on under the direction of intelligent management. There is no chance. There is a good reason for everything that is happening in the universe and there is intelligence behind the scenes managing and directing everything.

The science of God analyzes the constitutional position of God and His diverse energies. Material nature is called prakrti, or the energy of the Lord in His different purusa incarnations (expansions) as described in the Satvata-tantra:

“For material creation, Lord Krishna’s plenary expansion assumes three Visnus. The first one, Maha-Visnu, creates the total material energy, known as mahat-tattva. The second, Garbhodakasayi Visnu, enters into all the universes to create diversities in each of them. The third, Ksirodakasayi Visnu, is diffused as the all-pervading Supersoul in all the universes and is known as Paramatma, who is present even within the atoms. Anyone who knows these three Visnus can be liberated from material entanglement.”

This is a very important point and key to understanding the operation of the material world. In the creation of the Supreme Lord we see the same thing happening on different scales.

This was a theory put forward some years ago by Benoit Mandelbrot who discovered what he called the fractal geometry. Part of his discovery was ‘set similarity’. He discovered that in nature the exact same structures and systems are repeated on a larger and on a smaller scale. An example for this he would give was the branching structure in a tree. You will find that the main big trunk of the tree branches off, and similarly the smaller branches and even inside the leaves you see the veins branching off in the same way, and you see it happening in the roots of the tree. He noted it with the coastline also. No matter what scale you look at it still has the same sort of ‘roughness’.

Anyhow the main point is that in nature we see things are working in a similar way on different scales. It is a very important point to understand, for if we can understand this simple point that will open up our understanding of the universe immensely. We know from the Bhagavad-gita that our bodies are simply matter, they are machines made out of the material energy, and like the other machines we are familiar with, our bodies are completely lifeless and inanimate. As a machine needs to be worked by an operator similarly our material bodies need to be worked by us. And we are not these material bodies actually. We are the spirit souls who are operating or driving these material bodies.

The important point to grasp is that this principle is universal. Matter has no initiative of its own. Without the spirit soul our material bodies would just be lumps of flesh, bones, blood, stool and urine lying on the ground and rotting. Our material bodies only appear to be alive and only have the ability to move and act because they are being operated by us, the spirit soul.

This is the way the whole universe works. If we see matter moving or acting anywhere in the universe we can know for sure that it is not the matter moving by itself. There must be some living force that is moving the matter, or some living force who has created and who is working some machine that is moving the matter.

We can see it on a smaller scale. In our bodies there are many things going on that we are not actually aware of, and there are many other living entities within our body performing their particular tasks that are required to support and maintain the health of the body. Even right down to the level of cells we can find the symptoms of life and can find complex activities going on that can only be explained by intelligent direction. And when we look on a larger scale to any business or organization or country we see that things do not go on randomly simply by chance. No. Everywhere we find there is intelligent direction, there is management, there are rules and regulations and laws. And in this way things are going on nicely.

So here Krishna is giving us very important scientific information on how the universe is working. “For material creation, Lord Krishna’s plenary expansion assumes three Visnus.” So as we are the spirit soul present within and directing our bodies, also, on a larger scale, Krishna in the form of these three Visnus is the spirit soul of the entire universe. Visnu is the intelligent force that is ultimately the cause of all the activities going on in the universe.

If these three Visnus were not present in the universe all we would have would be a lump of matter. And matter without spirit can not move, can not develop, can not do anything. So it is the combination of the dull matter with these three Visnus that makes the creation of the material world possible.

“The first one, Maha-Visnu, creates the total material energy, known as mahat-tattva. The second, Garbhodakasayi Visnu, enters into all the universes to create diversities in each of them. The third, Ksirodakasayi Visnu, is diffused as the all-pervading Supersoul in all the universes and is known as Paramatma, who is present even within the atoms.” These few words, if understood and accepted by modern science, will revolutionize our understanding of the universe. Maha-Visnu creates the mahat-tattva which is the reservoir of all material elements, then from His body unlimited universes are generated each time He breathes out and all those universes are again destroyed, or more correctly conserved, and enter back within His body, only to be manifested again when He again breathes out. The universes come out of His body in seed form and expand and then when He breathes in the universes contract again and reenter His body. And this one breath of Maha-Visnu is the total universal time which is an unimaginably long period of time from our point of view. So within each of these universes Garbhodakasayi Visnu enters and He creates diversities in each universe. It is from the naval of Garbhodakasayi Visnu that a lotus stem grows and on the top of that lotus stem Lord Brahma is born and Lord Brahma is the original engineer of the universe, so he sets about creating the universe as we see it. And then Lord Visnu is present within every living entities heart in the form of Ksirodakasayi Visnu.

So this is the actual scientific understanding of the universe. The universe is a machine, in exactly the same way as our bodies are machines. And as machines can not work without an operator, as our bodies can not work without the presence of ourselves as the spirit soul, similarly, the soul of the universe is Lord Visnu in these three forms and the only reason we see things happening in the universe is because they are being caused to happen by these three Visnus. Matter does not move without the touch of spirit. These are such earth-shattering scientific principles that somehow we have to educate the people and the scientists on.

This material world is a temporary manifestation of one of the energies of the Lord. All the activities of the material world are directed by these three Visnu expansions of Lord Krishna. These purusas are called incarnations. Generally one who does not know the science of God (Krishna) assumes that this material world is for the enjoyment of the living entities and that the living entities are the causes (purusas), controllers and enjoyers of the material energy. According to Bhagavad-gita this atheistic conclusion is false. In the verse under discussion it is stated that Krishna is the original cause of the material manifestation. Srimad-Bhagavatam also confirms this. The ingredients of the material manifestation are separated energies of the Lord. Even the brahmajyoti, which is the ultimate goal of the impersonalists, is a spiritual energy manifested in the spiritual sky. There are no spiritual diversities in brahmajyoti as there are in the Vaikunthalokas, and the impersonalist accepts this brahmajyoti as the ultimate eternal goal. The Paramatma manifestation is also a temporary all-pervasive aspect of the Ksirodakasayi Visnu. The Paramatma manifestation is not eternal in the spiritual world. Therefore the factual Absolute Truth is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krishna. He is the complete energetic person, and He possesses different separated and internal energies.

In the material energy, the principal manifestations are eight, as above mentioned. Out of these, the first five manifestations, namely earth, water, fire, air and sky, are called the five gigantic creations or the gross creations, within which the five sense objects are included. They are the manifestations of physical sound, touch, form, taste and smell. Material science comprises these ten items and nothing more. But the other three items, namely mind, intelligence and false ego, are neglected by the materialists.

Philosophers who deal with mental activities are also not perfect in knowledge because they do not know the ultimate source, Krishna. The false ego–“I am,” and “It is mine,” which constitute the basic principle of material existence–includes ten sense organs for material activities. Intelligence refers to the total material creation, called the mahat-tattva. Therefore from the eight separated energies of the Lord are manifest the twenty-four elements of the material world, which are the subject matter of Sankhya atheistic philosophy; they are originally offshoots from Krishna’s energies and are separated from Him, but atheistic Sankhya philosophers with a poor fund of knowledge do not know Krishna as the cause of all causes. The subject matter for discussion in the Sankhya philosophy is only the manifestation of the external energy of Krishna, as it is described in the Bhagavad-gita.

About the Author

My first contact with a Hare Krishna was a most merciful Mataji in Oxford Street, London who sold me a "Higher Taste" cook book in 1984 while I was on holidays there. I started seriously reading Srila Prabhupada's books in Australia 1985 and by 1986 Srila Prabhupada had convinced me "Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead" and "we should surrender to Krishna." I joined the Hare Krishnas in Perth, Western Australia in 1986. Since then I have been chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, reading and distributing Srila Prabhupada's books and preaching as much as I can. That's my life and full-time occupation now really. I like it more than anything I've ever experienced before. Srila Prabhupada's books are so amazing... Even after reading them all many times they're still fresh and new. They are truly transcendental! That's it really. Now I'm just hankering to once again see the world chant Hare Krishna, dance and feast and float away in the ecstasy of Lord Caitanya's Sankirtana movement as it did in Srila Prabhupada's physical presence. Let the whole world drown in the ecstatic flood of love of Krishna!

    Hare Krishna prabhu ji,
I’m confused about something. You wrote that it is only lust that causes us to think we’re loving another person. But, there are other kinds of relationships that are not based on lust. A mother for a child is one very strong example of love that transcends the bodily concept. I understand that this can be seen as a selfish love because the child ‘belongs’ to the mother, but isn’t it genuine love nonetheless? There are so many instances that we know of where a mother, in various species, gives her life for her child. If our love here is but a reflection of our love for Krishna in the spiritual world, isn’t it a valid love when it’s felt by the individual as real, only on a smaller scale? Just as we’re of the same qualitative nature as Krishna but on a much smaller scale, isn’t our potential for loving each other in the material world also of the same nature as Krishna’s love, only limited due to our temporary experiences with other living entities?

    • No. Real love is for Krishna. Other so-called love is a perverted reflection of our real love for Krishna.

A reflection is not the real thing.

If you see a reflection of water, like a mirage in the desert, it looks like water, but it will not quench your thirst.

Similarly love in the material world may look like love but will not give us any pleasure. Love in the material world only causes pain ultimately. Because it always goes wrong and we are always separated from our lovable object. And because actually we love the material body, the body is constantly changing, and it changes into something that we no longer love…

So there is no love in the material world. Love is only in relation with Krishna.

      • Shrivishva says:

Why is it that I can’t perform any action selflessly if I don’t love what I am doing? I feel I love my parents so I love whatever I do for them.. but when I come to know this concept that love doesn’t exist in real I tend to go away from my responsibilities in agony that nothing is mine how do I accept the fact that there’s no love and still be happy with helping and doing things for people

        • Love in the material world is a perverted reflection of the real love that exists between Krishna and all the other living entities.

So your so-called love for your parents is not a real thing. It is based on your bodily connecting with your parent’s bodies. Your only connection with your parents is through your material body. Because your material body was produced from their material bodies. So your connection with your parents is material and temporary and only based on the body.

But we have to realize we are not these material bodies. We are the eternal spirit souls who are trapped within these temporary material bodies. And our disease, the thing that keeps us trapped in this material world, is our misidentification with these material bodies. So you are thinking you are that body that came from your parent’s bodies. So you are attached to your parents, on the basis of the bodily connection only.

So of course there is some attachment there but it is is temporary and as soon as your parents change their bodies or you change your body the connection is broken.

We are like twigs floating down a river. Sometimes a group of twigs is bundled together and floating down the river as a family, but then there is some turbulence and the twigs are all separated, never to meet again.

So this material world is like that. Our material families are like that.

So devotees reestablish their original loving relationships with Krishna, and they do everything for Krishna. And that is our real loving relationship, our relationship with Krishna. And by serving Krishna, by pleasing Krishna, automatically everyone else is pleased and served.

So this is the science of Krishna consciousness. Actually factually realizing that we are not these material bodies and have no connection with the material relationships like family which are only there because of the material body, and instead we reestablish our original eternal loving relationship with Krishna.

We have to give up one to get the other. If we are attached to family and other things related to our material bodies that will block our spiritual advancement. So we need to realize we are not the material bodies and act on the spiritual, transcendental platform, to reestablish our original loving relationship with Krishna.

And that loving relationship with Krishna includes everything. But if we remain on the material platform, family, etc, that will totally block any advancement in Krishna consciousness and Krishna consciousness will remain eternally a mystery to us…

  3. sumit says:

demigods are representatives of Krishna so if we worship demigods then aren’t we worshiping Krishna??

    • Hare Krishna Sumit

Demigods are not necessarily representatives of Krishna. Demigods are appointed by Krishna and serve Krishna by performing certain activities. But it is not that you get the same result by worshiping a demigod as the result you get by worshiping Krishna. Demigods are in the material world and are themselves not liberated. The demigods are also conditioned souls. They are devotees but they are materialistic devotees with material desires and are still within the material world.

So it is not within the power of the demigods to give spiritual benefit. The power of the demigods is to give some benediction within the material world only.

So the answer to your question is no. Worshiping demigods is most certainly not the same as worshiping Krishna. As Krishna Himself says in the Bhagavad-gita (karmas tais hrta-jnana) “Only unintelligent fools worship the demigods.”

So an intelligent person will worship Krishna. Because an intelligent person understands that there is no happiness in the material world. Even the demigods are subject to birth, old age, disease and death and all the ohter problems of the material world. So only fools worship the demigods.

Of course we offer all respects to the demigods. We do not disrespect the demigods. But we respect them as devotees. We do not worship the demigods. We worship Krishna.

  5. warren says:

why do u suppose that we had to have differant planets to incarnate through , and why a war planet as we are now on. thank u Hari Krisna from Nayaswami swarupa warren

    • I don’t ‘suppose’ anything. I hear from Srila Prabhupada and I hear from Krishna and I simply repeat what they say.

So what Srila Prabhupada says is that there are 8,400,000 species of life on different planets and each species of life enables the living entity to enjoy or suffer in a particular way. So the different planets and species of life are facilities for the living entities to fulfill their desires and get their karmic reactions.

We are on a war planet and suffering that because that is what we deserve according to our karma.

  6. Avinash says:

If soul is pure why does it get the tendency to lord over material nature?
I mean why should I be attracted to flesh or any form when I am part and parcel of Krishna?

    • Hare Krishna Avinash

We, the individual spiritual souls, are by nature tatastha, it means ‘marginal’. This is explained by giving the example of the beach on the shore of the ocean. Sometimes the sand is covered by the water and then, when the tide goes out, the sand is again open and uncovered. So we are like that sand that is sometimes covered by water [in maya, in the material world] and sometimes free and open [in the spiritual world].

We actually are pure spirit. We are, like Krishna, Brahman. But Krishna is para-brahman, unlimited, and we are tiny, insignificant.

It is our natural, eternal constitutional position to surrender to Krishna and serve Krishna. But we have a little independence. Our relationship with Krishna is one of love. And there is no question of love if there is no question of rejecting the lover. Love can not be by force. It has to be by choice.

So we have to independence to choose if we want to surrender to Krishna and serve Him or if we want to reject Krishna and try to imitate Krishna ourselves.

Because we are part and parcel of Krishna we have all the same qualities that Krishna has, but we have them in a tiny quantity whereas Krishna has them in unlimited quantity. So we also have the desire to control and become the Lord and master. But we are tiny and actually we can not become the controller and the lord and master. But due to our misuse of our independence we sometimes want to become the lord and master like Krishna. But this is not possible. Because Krishna is the Supreme Lord and Master eternally. So by Krishna’s unlimited mercy He creates this material world for us to play in. Here we can play and try to be the lord and master. But because we are not the lord and master, we are tiny, insignificant servants of Krishna, this is all maya, illusion.

So all these ideas that we can become the lord and master are illusion. They are not real. So ultimately everything is frustrated for us and after many, many births of frustration in the material world an intelligent person finally realizes that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and he surrenders to Krishna and goes back home, back to Godhead.

So it is like that. We, the tiny jivas, living entities, spirit souls, we have the tendency to fall down because of misusing our independence. Independence means we can fall down if we want to. That is what independence means. If we could not fall down then we would not have any independence.

That is our only independence actually. To surrender to Krishna and serve Krishna, or to surrender to maya and serve her. We are servants eternally. We have to serve. Our only independence is to choose our master. We can surrender to Krishna or we can surrender to maya. That’s all. That’s the only choice we have, that’s the only independence we have. We are servants eternally. Nothing can change that.

Today after reading this article I again thought what I thought on that day after coming back from iskcon, why do I need lectures from anyone, I already get madhudvisa prabhu’s mails. Why do I need there guidence when I have Krishna’s pure devotee prabhupad!!!.
this article is something which needs to be read once. Very nice.
    Hare Krishna prabhu ji

    • Hare Krishna Vanshika

Yes. Not me, but you have Prabhupada and you can hear Srila Prabhupada lecture at http://www.krishna.tv

And the advantage of hearing from Srila Prabhupada is that he is a pure devotee of Krishna and hearing from Srila Prabhupada will actually awaken our dormant Krishna consciousness.

Actually preaching is for pure devotees. Someone who is not himself a pure devotee of Krishna can not convince anyone else to become a pure devotee of Krishna. It is not possible. A smoker can not convince another man to give up smoking. It is not possible.

So ISKCON has a big problem when it comes to hearing. We want to become pure devotees of Krishna and to become pure devotees of Krishna we have to hear from a pure devotee of Krishna. That is the only way. And a pure devotee of Krishna is very rare. But you know the people who speak in ISKCON are generally not pure devotees of Krishna and if we hear them it will be useless. Because they can not elevate the people who hear them because they are not elevated themselves. They may be great scholars and know a lot of Sanskrit slokas and be able to pronounce them nicely. But hearing them will all be a useless waste of time. Worse than a waste of time because if they are not pure then hearing from them will make us impure.

It is a very important point that we have to understand that if someone is speaking on the Bhagavad-gita or the philosophy of Krishna consciousness it is not necessary good to hear from him. Only a pure devotee can understand Krishna and describe Krishna. Someone who is not a pure devotee can immitate this process of speaking on the Bhagavad-gita, etc, and so many do. But generally they have some personal desire, they want to get some benefit out of their preaching for themselves. They want to become famous, collect followers and disciples, make money, etc. This means they are really just businessmen and they have taken preaching as their business. And these men in the guru business are the worst most dangerous people. And you can read in Sri Isopanisad that Krishna keeps the worst hellish planet specifically for these “preachers” who have taken up preaching for some personal benefit. Their future is very, very dark, and so is, unfortunately, the futures of the people who hear from them.

Hearing is the most important thing, Krishna consciousness is obtained by sruti, by hearing. Not by any other sense. And we can only get Krishna consciousness if we hear from a pure devotee of Krishna. Anything else that will not help us advance in Krishna consciousness, it will divert us away from Krishna consciousness.

So we have to concentrate on hearing from Srila Prabhupada and we will be very safe then.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

      Madhudvisa dasa

      • Issac says:

Hare Krsna Madhudvisa dasa prabhuji. Firstly you have said “But hearing them will all be a useless waste of time. Worse than a waste of time because if they are not pure then hearing from them will make us impure.” You said about television being a waste of time and said worse than that the we will be bogged down with materialistic concepts or so something like this

Prabhuji these things seem implicitly a waste of time also which are the hearing making us impure and the absorbing materialistic concepts and destroying Krsna Consciousness.

Let me explain. First of all it is already a 100% waste of time.

So here is the implicit thing. Getting impure or Krsna Consciousness destroyed by the materialistic concepts will take us away from Krsna Consciousness. You already waste time plus you will be baffled and waste more time in confusion, and more desire to do the sinful thing, and plus if you more unfortunate act on the materialistic concepts, plus difficulty starting Krsna Consciousness which will take time. And plus when you start Krsna Consciosuness again it will take more time as you have more karma and desires to eradicate and plus more time to get noticeable results.

Second, you talked about hearing. How can you help a person who is deaf to be Krsna Consciousness. He cannot hear the Hare Krsna mantra so how can he speak? Although they might be ways to make the deaf person speak. What do you say.

        • Yes. It is correct what you say.

As far as thinking of how to help a deaf person become Krishna conscious, that is nice, but we have to fist become Krishna conscious ourselves, then if we are Krishna conscious ourselves then we will be in contact with Krishna in our hearts and then Krishna will be directly guiding us so we will be acting as Krishna’s representative so Krishna knows everything therefore we do not have to worry so much about knowing the details of everything. We just have to become pure devotees of Krishna ourselves and become guided by Krishna and then automatically we will know everything we need to know about everything we need to know about by the mercy of Krishna. Krishna is in everyone’s heart and He is giving us remembrance, knowledge and, for those who want it, forgetfulness.

Actually being deaf is very bad karma, but being a deaf human being is not as bad as taking birth as an animal or a tree. But certainly being deaf is a great disadvantage in trying to become Krishna consciousness. Because it impacts the person’s ability to perform the two primary items of devotional service: hearing and chanting. But you know there are nine processes of bhakti and one can become prefect through perfecton of even one of the nine processes. So it is still possible for a deaf person to become Krishna conscious. But it would be more difficult for them than for us who can hear and chant with no impediments.

    Hare Krishna !
Thank you for a very concise essay on the science of God and His Creation, the mother Nature.
If I am not wrong Sankhya philosophy was originally founded by Kapil Muni. Lord Krishna mentions him as one of His vibhutis – Siddhanam Kapilo Munih – in Gita ( 10.26 ).
I therefore do not understand when you say atheistic Sankhya philosophy.

    • Hare Krishna Yogendra

There are two Kapilas. The original Lord Kapila, the son of Devahuti who propounded the original theistic sankhya philosophy and then later on there was another Kapila, an atheistic Kapila who also established a sankhya philosophy, but that was atheistic sankhya. It is this atheistic sankhya philosophy that is somewhat popular among scientists and other demons…

Set similarity can be matching example with trunk, branches, leaves etc. There is similarity in origin of every living beings . If we see how every living being originated . Darwin gave one example of origin of species from embroyo grow in same shape.looks like from same origin and later takes different shapes. It is perfect explanation when we explain that evarything originated and created by God. But it is mistake of imperfect senses Darwin explain evarything but how could his mind think of God or it can be the reason if they everything originated from GOD THEN THERE WILL BE NO PLACE FOR THEIR SPECULATION WHICH IS THE SOURCE FOR THEIR NAME N FAME N EARNING. THAT CAN BE THE REASONsome SCIENTIST DO NOT WANT TO EXPLAIN FROM GOD. THOSE WHO TAKE TRUE KNOWLEDGE FROM SPRITUAL SCIENTIST CAN EXPLAIN REALITY N PERFECT THEIR LIFE….

The business of the mind is thinking, feeling and willing. The mind is very closely connected with the senses. So the mind gets the information from the senses and processes that and thinks, feels and wills. So when you think of doing something as a result of some inputs from your senses, etc, that is the mind doing the thinking, feeling and willing. The intelligence is above the mind and the business of the intelligence is accepting and rejecting. The mind comes up with all sorts of plans to try to satisfy the senses and presents those plans and suggestions to the intelligence and the intelligence either accepts or rejects these plans put forward by the mind.

You can practically experience this working of your mind and your intelligence every day. Whenever you come across something that can satisfy your senses like some nice food or some beautiful woman your mind will suggest that you eat that food and try to have sex with that woman… And the mind will present its proposals to your intelligence and your intelligence will reject these ideas if your mind is controlled but if your mind is uncontrolled and the intelligence can not keep it under control then you will be forced to try and carry out the dictation of the mad mind.

So this is the way and you can understand it in greater detail by reading Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita As It Is.

    Dear Guruji

I read your messages regularly. This message on the science of god, gives an idea of that “me” in me. But a sorrow comes in.Then what is that identity of mine. If i am a jivatma totally controlled by the paratma, what about my desires. I am I a slave to the paramatma. I cant control anything. My possessions, people whom i love all contribute to my happiness, and iam told that these are all not yours. somehow i find an identity crisis. What is that and how can i hold on to the paramatma and at the same time feel a strong sense of identity from where my happiness evolves today. Please advice

You have to realize first that you are not the material body. You are not an Indian, you are not a member of the family that you think you are in, you have no permanent connection with the people you think you love, and what you love is not actually the people but it is simply based on some temporary bodily relationship.

So you are in maya and you are writing to me to ask me to reassure you that your illusion is good and I can not do that.

You are in the bodily concept of life. You are identifying with your material body and you are very much attached to the things in relation to that material body but these bodily relationships are illusory. They are illusory because we are not the material body, we are the eternal spirit soul who is currently within this particular body. This material so-called love will only end up in frustration and disappointment ultimately, it has no ability to give us any real satisfaction or pleasure. The problem is we, as spirit souls, are eternal therefore for any satisfying relationship we require to have a relationship with something else that is eternal. But when you fall in ‘love’ with some other person in the material world you are not actually falling in love with the person, you see their material body and think that you can get some satisfaction for your senses from that material body and therefore you try to create a relationship with that person. This is not love, it is lust. It is driven by a desire to satisfy your senses only, and because of the nature of the material body the senses can never be satisfied no matter how much sense gratification you are able to provide them with.

So the main point we have to realize is that these relationships based on the bodily concept of life are temporary and not able to provide us with any actual pleasure in the ultimate issue. For real love and real pleasure we have to reestablish our relationship with Krishna by chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. We can experience real love and real pleasure only in relationship with Krishna.

As far as your possessions not being yours that is a fact. Everything belongs to Krishna and we have to realize this fact and use Krishna’s things in the service of Krishna. Otherwise we are thieves and we will have to suffer because of that. We do not posses anything. We are eternally servants. We can never be the master, never own anything, never be the ‘boss’. We are nitya-krishna-das, eternal servants of Krishna. Of course here in the material world we are the rebellious living entities who have rejected this service of Krishna and who have come to this material world to try and be happy separately from Krishna. But actually this idea of being separate from Krishna is only an illusion and that is called maya. Maya is the superintendent of this material world and by her bewildering potency we are able to forget our eternal relationship with Krishna and we are able to believe the lie that we can somehow make a comfortable arrangement here in the material world and live here happily. This illusion is created by maya. It is not possible to be happy in the material world. The material world is certified by Krishna in Bhagavad-gita as being dukalayam-asasvatam, a miserable place full of suffering where there is repeated birth and death. This is the real nature of the material world, it is only because of the illusion made possible by maya that we think otherwise.

We are eternal servants of Krishna and the only way we will ever be happy is by surrendering to Krishna and serving Krishna. There is no other way. We are servants, we are not masters. Everything belongs to our master Krishna, nothing belongs to us…

If you are not prepared to accept this truth then you will be forced to suffer endlessly in the material world until you do accept it…

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

  17. Venus says:

If it is said in our Vedanta and Gita that this world is nothing but an illusion of material things and I do believe that we are living in a temporary phase……my question is why do we love n why do we become attracted towards another person and start loving that person dearly……i also believe that LOVE is God’s greatest strength that He has bestowed on us….

    • Hare Krishna Venus

Love in the material world is simply a perverted reflection of our original real love for Krishna. Actually there is no real love in the material world. What we take as being love in the material world is only lust. And that lust is the shackles of maya that bind us to this material world. So the so-called love you are talking about is the greatest stumbling block in spiritual life. Because our position is to love and serve Krishna and when we are bewildered by lust and infatuated by that we are blinded and that means we can not develop our love for Krishna.

So this so-called love is the greatest problem for one who wants to advance in spiritual life and to get out of the endless cycle of birth and death.

As for your question, why we become attracted to another person, it is lust only. And we are not falling in love with that person, it is not that at all, it is that the senses of our body are attracted by that person’s material body want to enjoy that person’s material body. It is lust only. You do not fall in ‘love’ with an ugly person. You fall in love with a person that you imagine can satisfy the senses of your material body.

So it is not at all love and it has nothing to do with the other person actually. It is simply lust. You are attracted by the other person’s body and want to enjoy the other person’s body. That is all. Lust. Only lust.

So for making advancement in spiritual life this lust has to be given up and that is possible by cultivating our love for Krishna. If we reestablish our original loving relationship with Krishna then we will no longer find any attraction for the lust of the material world that goes on under the false title of love.
