> are you saying that repeating the mantra silently has no positive > effect? its not all i do, i also chant, just not all the time when i > am walking around. > Hello. Hare Krishna! No. Thinking about Krishna in the mind has some effect also. There are nine processes of devotional service: "Hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name, form, qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of Lord Visnu, ERMEMBERING THEM, serving the lotus feet of the Lorrd, offering the Lord respectful worship with sixteen types of paraphernaila, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming His servantm considering the Lord one's best friend, and surrendering everything unto Him (in other words, serving Him with the body, mind and words) -- these nine processes are accepted as pure devotional service. One who has dedicated his life to the service of Krishna through these nine methods should be understood to be the most learned person, for he has acquired complete knowledge." (Srimad-Bhagavatam) So remembering is certainly one of the nine processes of devotional service, but this age, Kali-yuga, is a very disturbed time and it is difficult to fix the mind on Krishna. So in this age the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra is specially stressed: harer nama hare nama harer namaiva kevalam kalau nasty eva nastya eva nastya eva gatir anyatha "In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the Holy names of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way." (Brhad-naradiya Purana 3.8.126) So even though Kali-yuga is very disturbed by chanting and hearing the Hare Krishna mantra we can control our minds. It is a very powerful process -- it can counteract all the bad effects of this sinful age"The sixteen words of the Hare Krishna mantra are especially meant for counteracting the sins of the age of Kali. To save oneself from the contamination of this age there is no alternative but to chant the Hare Krishna mantra. After searching through the Vedic literatures one cannot find a method of religion for this age so sublime as the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra" (Kali-Santarana Upanasid) So chanting is so nice also that you can do it anywhere, you can chant while walking, while on the bus, while cooking, etc... There is no other system of yoga so easy to perform... So chant Hare Krishna and be happy! Madhudvisa dasa
