>Dear Sir, > Is it true that Krishna was born on the eve of the Kali-Yuga? He lived 5000 >years ago, about 3000-2500 B.C., right? Does that mean that the Kali-Yuga >itself, in >this Pralaya, is 5000 years old? and that the world will end in about 481,000 >years? The >Kali-Yuga in the Vedas are written to be 486,000 years old, if my memory serves >me >correctly. > >It is interesting to note that Western science tells us that the world is 4.5 >billion >years old, approximately (carbon dating and paleontology are more arts than >true >sciences). And the Vedas say that one Pralaya is about 4.5 billion years long. >So >perhaps it can be safely said that this world has about 480,000 years left in >it? > > (A developing Gopala-bhakta) > Dear Dushyant Hello. Hare Krishna! All glories to Srila Prabhupada! Krishna appeared about 125 years before the Kali-yuga commenced. He disappeared from this world just before the Kali-yuga started (at the end of the Dvapara-yuga). Krishna appeared about 5,000 years ago so we are about 5,000 years into the Kali-yuga now. It lasts 432,000 years so there is still about 427,000 years to go. The complete cycle of Satya (1,728,000), Tretya (1,296,000), Dvapara (864,000) and Kali-yugas (432,000) last 4,320,000 years of which 3,893,000 have already passed. But that is one yle only. There are 1,000 cycles in one of Lord Brahma's days and another thousand in his night. There is a partial destruction of the universe at the end of Lord Brahma's day that is a partial pralaya. So that is 1,000 * 4,320,000 which gives you 4,320,000,000. But that is just one day of Lord Brahma. He lives for 100 years so the total universal time is 4,320,000,000 * 2 * 30 * 12 * 100... But I think the scientists are talking about the partial pralaya. I am interested in these scientific things so please write with other questions and ideas. Chant Hare Krishna and be happy! It is very important to present the Vedic ideas in modern sientific language. It is a great science, the supreme science, but due to cultural differences and a lack of faith in the Indians in general the Western "scientific" ideas have eclipsed everything. But the Vedas is a storehouse of all sorts of knowledge, both spiritual and material. Western science, while it may be a little advanced in some small technical areas, does not even accept the existence of anything beyond the gross material elements. Even though so many things can not be satisfactorily explained without considering the soul or God they stick to their guns. "It all came from nothing... There was a big bang... Life came from a random mixture of gasses..." These are not scientific statements, they can not be proved and there is no experiment possible to demonstrate these things... It is simply a plot to paint God, Krishna out of the picture, that is all... As for their carbon dating of 4.5 billion years old, I wouldn't take it too seriously. It is a "educated guess" like most of "Science"... Looking forward to hearing from you again. Your servant, Madhudvisa dasa
