So we discovered a way to improve the quality of the Prabhupada Acharya series videos even more. So here is Srila Prabhupada the Acharya Part 4, in truly stunning, first-class, very clear 1080p HD. You really have never seen Prabhupada so clearly on film or video before.
In this, the fourth part of the series “Srila Prabhupada the Acharya” we see Srila Prabhupada going about his everyday activities. Srila Prabhupada is a pure devotee of Krishna, a paramahamsa, a very rare spiritual personality who is constantly in contact with Krishna. Krishna has been very merciful to us by sending His pure devotee, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhuapda, to explain to us, in very clear, simple and easy to understand language, the deepest, most confidential spiritual secrets from the timeless Vedas, India’s storehouse of knowledge.
We see Srila Prabhupada on a morning walk with some of his disciples and guests on Venice Beach, close to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness’s [ISKCON] Western world headquarters. Then Srila Prabhupada returns to the New Dvaraka temple and greets the Deities, Sri Sri Rukmini Dvarakadhisa. Then Srila Prabhupada delivers a lecture on the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the culmination of the writings of the great Vedic sage Srila Vyasadeva. Vyasadeva is the author of all the principal Vedic literatures and Srimad-Bhagavatam is his final and most perfect contribution.
After his discussion on Srimad-Bhagavatam we see Srila Prabhupada, this time in his garden in Bombay with some of his disciples, in an afternoon darshan. Here we see Srila Prabhupada discussion the soul and the body. Srila Prabhupada explains that we are not the material body, but rather the material body is simply a mechanical device, a machine, that is being operated by the spirit soul. So we are a spiritual entity trapped in a material machine. The process of Krishna consciousness, or any spiritual pursuit, begins with this very simple and sublime realisation, “I am not this body.”
To conclude this film we see another afternoon discussion with Srila Prabhupada, this time back at New Dvaraka, Los Angeles, with a university professor. The subject matter is the same, the fact that we are not the material body but the spirit soul within the body.
This point, that we are not the body, we are the spirit soul within the body, driving the machine of the body, is a topic that repeats quite often during the discourses of Srila Prabhuapda. That is because, although it is a very simple point, and we can understand it quite easily in theory, but the reality, in practice, is that we are still acting on the bodily concept of life. This idea of identification of the self with the body is so totally ingrained in us for so many lifetimes that even if we theoretically understand that we are not the material body, but the spirit soul within the body, we still continue to act on the bodily concept of life.
So it is necessary that we be constantly reminded that we are not the material body and that the desires and needs of the material body are not actually our desires and needs. The whole world is moving on the bodily concept of life, we do not even question it. We identify with our material bodies, thinking we are black, white, American, Indian, Australian, etc.
But in reality the body is just a temporary material machine which we, the spirit souls, are inhabiting for a very short moment. As soon as this material body is old and useless we, the spirit souls, are forced to give up this body and according to our consciousness at the time of death our souls are transferred to our next material body.
So we are on this eternal journey, travelling from one material body to another, in our endless eternal search for pleasure in the material world, not knowing that actually there is no pleasure in the material world.
Because we have misidentified our selves with our material bodies we are mistakenly thinking that if we satisfy the senses of our material bodies then we will become happy. The whole world is working on this principle, the relentless search for unattainable happiness through the futile attempt to satisfy our material senses.
The most captivating attraction the material word has is sex life. Everyone is motivated by sex life, but even when we achieve our goals we are still not happy, still not satisfied.
The reason for our constant frustration and dissatisfaction, even if we become successful in satisfying our senses, is this misidentification of the self, our conviction that “I am this body.” We think if we can satisfy the senses of this material body we will be happy, but that is a mistake. Because the material body is just a machine, like our motorcar, it is a machine. The needs of the motorcar are different from our needs.
If I think that by providing the motorcar with fuel, oil, etc, then I will be happy, that is a mistake. Because my needs, as the driver of the motorcar, are completely different from the needs of the machine, the motorcar I am driving. Similarly my needs, as a spirit soul, are completely different from the needs of my body. My body is craving for fulfilling the demands of my senses: eating, sleeping, mating and defending, but working to satisfy these basic animal needs is just like working to put fuel and oil in my motorcar. These are the needs of the machine I am driving, my needs, as spirit soul, they are completely different.
So to make any progress in any spiritual discipline first we have to come to the realisation that we are not these material bodies but we are the spirit souls, the drivers who are within these material bodies and who are controlling these material machines. Once we come to the realisation that we are not the material machines but we are the spirt souls within the machines, then the question is “What are the needs of the spirit soul and how to satisfy them?” So this is the beginning of Krishna consciousness.
