Goloka Vrindavan — The Best Planet

We have been hearing about Lord Brahma and his planet Brahmaloka. Lord Brahma’s lifetime is so long we can not imagine it and his standard of living is so much greater than ours that it is incomprehensible for us. But still Lord Brahma has a material body which gets old, sick and eventually dies. And his planet also is not eternal. After Lord Brahma dies his planet is destroyed also.

So in Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna goes on to describe something far greater than Lord Brahma’s planet, His own personal abode Goloka Vrindavan in the spiritual world:

Yet there is another nature, which is eternal and is transcendental to this manifested and unmanifested matter. It is supreme and is never annihilated. When all in this world is annihilated, that part remains as it is. (Bhagavad-gita 8.20)

Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead so naturally Krishna’s planet is the best planet.

Krishna’s superior spiritual energy is transcendental and eternal. It is beyond all the changes of material nature, which is manifest and annihilated during the days and nights of Brahma. Krishna’s superior energy is completely opposite in quality to material nature.

That supreme abode is called unmanifested and infallible, and it is the supreme destination.

When one goes there, he never comes back. That is My supreme abode.
  (Bhagavad-gita 8.21)

The supreme abode of the Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is described in the Brahma-samhita as cintamani-dhama, a place where all desires are fulfilled. The supreme abode of Lord Krishna known as Goloka Vrindavan is full of palaces made of touchstone. There are also trees which are called “desire trees” that supply any type of eatable upon demand, and there are cows known as surabhi cows which supply a limitless supply of milk.

In this abode, the Lord is served by hundreds of thousands of goddesses of fortune (Laksmis), and He is called Govinda, the primal Lord and the cause of all causes. Lord Krishna is accustomed to blow His flute.

His transcendental form is the most attractive in all the worlds—His eyes are like the lotus petals and the color of His body like clouds.

He is so attractive that His beauty excels that of thousands of cupids. He wears saffron cloth, a garland around His neck and a peacock feather in His hair.

In the Gita Lord Krishna gives only a small hint of His personal abode (Goloka Vrindavan) which is the supermost planet in the spiritual kingdom. A vivid description is given in the Brahma-samhita.

Vedic literature states that there is nothing superior to the abode of the Supreme Godhead, and that that abode is the ultimate destination. When one attains to it, he never returns to the material world.

Krishna’s supreme abode and Krishna Himself are nondifferent, being of the same quality.

On this earth, Vrindavan, ninety miles southeast of Delhi, is a replica of that supreme Goloka Vrindavan located in the spiritual sky. When Krishna descended on this earth, He sported on that particular tract of land known as Vrindavan in the district of Mathura, India.

About the Author

My first contact with a Hare Krishna was a most merciful Mataji in Oxford Street, London who sold me a "Higher Taste" cook book in 1984 while I was on holidays there. I started seriously reading Srila Prabhupada's books in Australia 1985 and by 1986 Srila Prabhupada had convinced me "Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead" and "we should surrender to Krishna." I joined the Hare Krishnas in Perth, Western Australia in 1986. Since then I have been chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, reading and distributing Srila Prabhupada's books and preaching as much as I can. That's my life and full-time occupation now really. I like it more than anything I've ever experienced before. Srila Prabhupada's books are so amazing... Even after reading them all many times they're still fresh and new. They are truly transcendental! That's it really. Now I'm just hankering to once again see the world chant Hare Krishna, dance and feast and float away in the ecstasy of Lord Caitanya's Sankirtana movement as it did in Srila Prabhupada's physical presence. Let the whole world drown in the ecstatic flood of love of Krishna!

You said a very interesting thing — be Krisna conscious 24 hours a day. Would you kindly shed some light on how to be Krisna conscious in dream or sleep state, where our present identity is completely eradicated? Are you conscious of Krisna or of your being a devotee in that state too?

    • Become Krishna conscious when you are awake, gradually if you actually become completely Krishna conscious you will also dream about Krishna conscious activities and will be engaged in serving Krishna and preaching in your dreams too.

  3. Gaurang Singh says:

Hare Krishna prabhuji , l am a Btech student in my final year and I am very much attracted to everything related to Lord Krishna. So please help me how can I practically develop Krishna consciousness at this stage of my life…..THANK YOU

    • If you want to become Krishna conscious then you have to read Srila Prabhupada’s books, follow the instructions you find while reading the books and chant Hare Krishna. It is a very simple thing. But mostly we refuse to follow the very simple things and therefore don’t become Krishna conscious. But if you follow the simple instructions Srila Prabhupada gives you as you read his books you will become Krishna conscious quite quickly.

  4. Radica says:

If you wish to serve as a female in goloka vrindavan and then after some time you wish to serve as a male- is that even possible?

    • Why waste time thinking about these things? First get to Goloka Vrindavan then you will understand the full details of what life is like there.

      • Krsna says:

Hare Krishna Madhudvisa dasa prabhuji. What should we think and/or do while we are here on earth instead of thinking about these things.

        • We have to become Krishna conscious. That process is described in Srila Prabhupada’s books. So we should read them and we should hear from Srila Prabhupada as we read and we will find he is giving us many practical instructions which, if we follow them, will help us become engaged in the service of Krishna 24 hours a day under the direction of a pure devotee of Krishna.

What we are supposed to be doing is practical service to Srila Prabhupada and Krishna. So the mission of Krishna, the mission of Lord Caitanya, the mission of Srila Prabhupada is to awaken the dormant Krishna consciousness in the hearts of the conditioned souls. Which means preaching Krishna consciousness. Which means going out on the streets of all the cities of the world and performing sankirtan, the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

So when the conditioned souls hear the vibration of the Hare Krishna mantra chanted from the lips of pure devotees the dormant Krishna consciousness will be awakened within their hearts. Sankirtan is also the distribution of Srila Prabhupada’s books, in fact that is the better sankirtan, the brhad-mrdanga. When we chant it will go maybe a block or so, but when we distribute Srila Prabhupada’s transcendental books that vibration will spread all over the world.

Also devotees are engaged in distributing Krishna prasadam, that is a way the conditioned souls can associate with Krishna, by tasting Krishna prasadam. That is a very ecstatic way anyone can easily associate with Krishna and make spiritual advancement.

So we should be doing practical service. Thinking how we can increase the sankirtan, the book distribution, the prasadam distribution, the preaching, and we need to be engaged in these things 24 hours a day. That is Krishna conscientiousness.

Then, if we are actually fully engaged in practical devotional service under the direction of a pure devotee of Krishna, automatically from within our heart Krishna will reveal so many things to us. So these things, what life is like in the spiritual world, etc, can not be understood or imagined in our current conditioned state. The only way they can be understood or realized is if they are revealed to us by Krishna. These things are avan-manasa gochara, beyond the ability of our minds to imagine and beyond the ability of our senses to perceive. So it is useless to mentally speculate on these things. It is only possible by revaluation.

So please seriously take to chanting the Hare Krishna mantra at least 16 rounds a day, strictly follow the four regulative principles [no illicit sex, no meat eating, no gambling and no intoxication] and read Srila Prabhupada’s books at least 1-2 hours a day. This is the beginning point of Krishna consciousness. If we do not come even to this beginning point then there is no spiritual life, it is just sentimentality.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

  5. Manesh says:

Hare Krishna, a question Pr. Is it to be understood that one has to be in the form of a female to serve Krishna in Goloka? Can you not serve Krishna in Goloka as a male friend or servant like Arjun for example?

    • In Goloka the two sorts of most confidential devotees of Krishna are the gopis and the cowherd boys. So you can serve Krishna there as a male or female. Our you can serve as one of the elderly gopis or cowherd men in Vrindavan, etc, etc. There are unlimited opportunities to serve Krishna in Goloka Vrindavan, not just in the female form.

  6. Sasi says:

    Hare krishna prabhu

After observing fasting on ekadasi one should take prasadam on the next day.But due to my present situation I won’t be able to obtain prasadam. Is chanting and reading Srila Prabupada’s books on ekadasi sufficient?

  9. Reznicksingh says:

Wats the most strongest n powerful Krishna mantra that can be used for strength, education n more

    • Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

This is the maha-mantra. It is the strongest, most powerful mantra. There is nothing stronger than the Hare Krishna maha-mantra anywhere in the spiritual or material worlds.

  10. Kumud says:

I m a sincere devotee of Lord Krishna and enaged in temple services after leaving a job.

I always visualise Goloka On what I hv read about it in various scriptures. vridavan is a holy place one cant challege it. When Krishna was on this planet definetly it was replica of Goloka. Can we compare it with Goloka even today?? We can experience it with “Bhav” and by considering its spiritual values. But only devotees will hv such visualization and consideration, what about people who r non believer of Krishna as God!! What if they see today’s Vridavan in its physical form!! I just want ur guidance on this!!

    • Hare Krishna Kumud

One thing is as we advance in Krishna consciousness we come to see the truth that we are not very great devotees. Actually a great devotee feels very unqualified. But that realization takes time to come.

Yes. Your realizations about Vrindavan are correct. Before the time of Lord Caitanya some 530 years ago Vrindavan was covered, it was lost, there was nothing there. Lord Caitanya visited there and rediscovered the places of pilgrimage with His disciples. So there was nothing there at all. Some agricultural fields only. So there was a small puddle and Lord Caitanya informed His disciples, “This is Radha-Kunda”, and another puddle, He informed, “The is Shyma Kunda”. So in this way Vrindavan was rediscovered. And Lord Caitanya sent the Six Goswamis to Vrindavan to continue reestablishing the places of Lord Krishna’s pastimes and opening temples, etc.

So in this way, about five hundred years ago, the Six Goswamis, under the direction of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu reestablished all the places of Krishna’s pastimes and opened the original seven temples in Vrindavan.

So Vrindavan was again manifest for some time.

But in the past 40 years gradually more and more Vrindavan is being covered up. A place of pilgrimage is a place of pilgrimage only because of the presence of the holy sages who live there. And one time, even in our memory, the people living in Vrindavan where all serious devotees of Krishna. They were all getting out of bed early in the morning and taking bath in the Yamuna and visiting the temples morning and evening and were all fully engaged in Krishna consciousness.

There was nothing in Vrindavan except devotees and service of Krishna.

But we have seen over the past 30 years basically Delhi has extended and now Vrindavan and Mathura are really only suburbs of Delhi. Now Vrindavan and Delhi are full of materialists. Devotees are still there but now they are very much in the minority. So this has completely changed the mood in Vrindavan and Mathura.

Vrindavan is eternal and pure devotees can see Vrindavan anywhere. Pure devotees can create Vrindavan anywhere. So really Vrindavan is in the hearts of the pure devotees.

It used to be that even nondevotees could visit Vrindavan and could sense the Vrindavan mood. But that is no longer the case. Now if you go to Vrindavan materialism has become very prominent and the Vrindavan life is hard to find.

But Vrindavan is still there and the pure devotees can still appreciate Vrindavan and the current apparent contamination of Vrindavan can be eradicated by the presence of actual pure devotees in Vrindavan.

So the point is Vrindavan is there. That is the place where Lord Krishna appeared on this planet Five Thousand years ago. So pure devotees will appreciate this no matter what the external manifestation is. Lord Caitanya was very ecstatic to discover Vrindavan even though when He discovered it there was nothing there from the material point of view. Just some agricultural fields. But Lord Caitanya was in ecstasy and enjoying the pastimes of Radha and Krishna that are always going on in Vrindavan…

  11. claude says:

    Thank you.
When Jesus Christ refer to “THE KINGDOM OF GOD” in his teachings(Which is eternal) is he referring to Goloka Vrndavana?
Did Jesus Christ realization of God was actually the personal form of Sri Krsna?

    • Hare Krishna Claude

It is hard to say exactly what Jesus Christ was referring to because we do not have any reliable record of the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ. What record we have of his teachings was written down thirty or more years after his death from the memory of some of his followers. And the accounts of the different followers are not always consistent either.

So it does not matter actually, about what is in the Bible. We have everything that is in the Bible in a very perfect and complete way, and much, much more, in Srila Prabhupada’s books. So we just need to read Srila Prabhupada’s books and we will come to understand everything. There is no need to bother with the Bible.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!
