About the Author

My first contact with a Hare Krishna was a most merciful Mataji in Oxford Street, London who sold me a "Higher Taste" cook book in 1984 while I was on holidays there. I started seriously reading Srila Prabhupada's books in Australia 1985 and by 1986 Srila Prabhupada had convinced me "Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead" and "we should surrender to Krishna." I joined the Hare Krishnas in Perth, Western Australia in 1986. Since then I have been chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, reading and distributing Srila Prabhupada's books and preaching as much as I can. That's my life and full-time occupation now really. I like it more than anything I've ever experienced before. Srila Prabhupada's books are so amazing... Even after reading them all many times they're still fresh and new. They are truly transcendental! That's it really. Now I'm just hankering to once again see the world chant Hare Krishna, dance and feast and float away in the ecstasy of Lord Caitanya's Sankirtana movement as it did in Srila Prabhupada's physical presence. Let the whole world drown in the ecstatic flood of love of Krishna!

Is this 30 volume set still available? Is it small like the black set?

  2. Rupavati Devi Dasi says:

    Hare Krishna Prabhus,

    Please accept my obeisances.

    All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I just found out that this version that I bought from you a few years back is actually not Śrila Prabhupada’s original version, rather it is the changed version

I discovered this on this website dedicated to “Distinguishing Srila Prabhupada’s
Original Books from Changed Ones” http://www.prabhupada.de/Books/dspobfco.html

Kindly advise what to do with this set. Should I just keep the colour plates and destroy the rest, before ordering Srila Prabhupada’s original Srimad Bhagavatam.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Thank you.

    • The previous edition IS also original edition in the sense the books were printed before 1977 in Prabhupada’s presence.

So there is noting wrong with it. You can read it, it is good. Certainly DO NOT DESTROY IT…. That would be a great offense.

But you should also order original First Edition.

First Edition is nicer but second edition is also OK.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

        Hare Krishna Madhudvisa prabhu,
        Pranam.
        Jai Srila Prabhupada!
        Thanks for your response.
The version I have IS the changed one.

On the print details of it only mentions “Copyright 1972 The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust – ISBN 089213-401–1, ISBN 0-89213-430-5 (30-volume-set).

Also, verse 1.11.8 in Srila Prabhupada’s original version reads:

“Oh, it is our good luck that we have today become again under the protection of our Lord by Your presence; although Your Lordship is rarely visited even by the denizens of heaven. Now it will be possible for us to look unto Your smiling face full of affectionate observance. We can see now Your transcendental form full of all auspiciousness.”

Whereas, in the version I have has been CHANGED to:

“Oh, it is our good luck that we have come again today under Your protection by Your presence, for Your Lordship rarely visits even the denizens of heaven. Now it is possible for us to look into Your smiling face, which is full of affectionate glances. We can now see Your transcendental form, full of all auspiciousness.”

I would NEVER destroy even the changed version, and neither would I give it away to anyone because that would be misleading and an APARADHA to Srila Prabhupada.
I will instead return the set to the local temple that distributes changed books, after removing Srila Prabhupada’s pictures along with the colour plates from the books.
I will also label each book stating that, “This is NOT the original but the CHANGED version that may be distributed & read at your own risk of committing the greatest APARADHA at the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada.”

        • Yes. But this change is not bad, it is a correction. So there are many cases like this, generally in Srimad-Bhagavatam pre-1977 edition they ‘changes’ are corrections made to real typographical errors. There are many real typographical errors in the first edition books, and most of these have been corrected by the BBT editors. Which is what Srila Prabhupada wanted them to do. Real bad changing started much later, and was most obvious in
‘Revised and Enlarged’ edition of Bhagavad-gita As It Is first printed in 1983. But, as Srila Prabhupada points out very clearly in his 1977 ‘Rascal Editors’ conversation, he was not happy with the direction the editing of his books was taking at least in the last couple of years (1976-1977).

So we should be aware that there are some actual typographical errors in Prabhupada’s first-edition books which Prabhupada wants corrected. The problem is the ISKCON editors, particularly in the later years, were not satisfied with simply correct the real typographical errors. They also change many other things because they wanted to impose their own personal editing ‘style’ on Prabhupada’s books, and in some cases they changed things to push their own personal views on various points of the philosophy, etc. So the books currently printed by BBT are a great mess. And no longer bona fide.

But pre-1977 Bhagavatam set, most of the ‘changes’, like the one you have quoted here, are not changes, but corrections of real typographical errors in the original printing.

So both first edition and second edition Bhagavatam sets are OK. However Bhagavatam currently printed by ISKCON will have many, many completely unauthorized changes unfortunately.

I’m not able to hold space for multiple volumes of Srimad Bhagavatam due to being on the move and not enough storage space while on the road.
I am, though, available to purchase the compact (volumes 1-10.13) version immediately.

Any suggestions on where I could find it for purchase?

  8. Dhananjay Vashistha says:

Is 44 volume SB available in India & what is its cost? From which ISKCON centre I can this set as i don’t find it on most of the centres?
If not available, then when BBT is planning to print this 44 volume SB again?
What is the difference between 30 volume & 44 volume SB?

    please please reply me soon

  9. Diluckshini says:

Is the Srimad Bhagavatam Set Still available…isn’t there anyway to continue the production of these books?

  10. sathya says:

    hare krsna prabhu

can you please tell me the 30 volume srimad bhagavatam can be purchased anytime or later it will become not available permanently.

    • Hare Krishna Sathya

You should purchase it now. It is very limited supply and when the supply is finished it will be gone. There is no current program to reprint it unfortunately… Even if it does get reprinted it will be more expensive then… But BBT only want to print the 44 volume with the bogus “bhaktivedanta purports” by Hriydananda… And that is very much more expensive… And the extra books you would not want to read…
