If you already own the old Prabhupada MP3 set and are wondering if you really need the new set if you understand a little history of how the old MP3 set was produced you will see why you need the new set.
The old MP3 set was produced by devotees in Europe many years ago. The technology was not so advanced therefore the quality of the MP3 files they produced was low. It was not an official Bhaktivedanta Archives production so they did not have access to the Bhaktivedanta Tape Ministry master tapes. All they had to work from was an incomplete set of poor quality Prabhupada lecture cassette tapes that had been copied onto 60 minute tapes. Many of the master tapes are longer than 60 minutes, as a result the first Prabhupada MP3 set has many classes cut off before they finish, and the audio quality is very poor compared to what we have been able to achieve by using the original master tapes and today’s technology, and there are hundreds of missing recordings.
The European devotees who produced the old set performed a great service to Srila Prabhupada and the devotees by making Prabhupada available in the MP3 format and the old Prabhupada MP3 set has inspired so many devotees and has been of great value.
About 18 months ago I decided to seriously and systematically listen to all the Prabhupada audio recordings from the old MP3 set. However I became frustrated by the poor quality audio and the many classes that are cut off before they end and many other strange problems in the recordings. I knew it was possible to produce much better MP3 files from the master tapes. I presented this idea to Ekanatha Prabhu at Bhaktivedanta Archives and he agreed to make the master tapes available. So after almost a year of full time work on the project and with the help of Nara Narayana Prabhu, Kuvalesaya Prabhu, Bhakten Stephenie Winn and Nrsimhananda Prabhu the project is now finally completed.
For the last few months I have been listening to the new Prabhupada MP3 set and it is really wonderful. It is so much better than the old set. It is much better even than listening to the best of the cassette tape recordings on the best equipment.
This new set has really provided us with access to the Prabhupada recordings in the best quality that has ever been possible.
